Bioinspired self-repairing slippery surfaces with pressure-stable omniphobicity
Tak Sing Wong,Sung Hoon Kang,Sindy K. Y. Tang,Elizabeth Smythe,Benjamin Hatton,Alison Grinthal,Joanna Aizenberg +6 more
TL;DR: A strategy to create self-healing, slippery liquid-infused porous surface(s) (SLIPS) with exceptional liquid- and ice-repellency, pressure stability and enhanced optical transparency, applicable to various inexpensive, low-surface-energy structured materials (such as porous Teflon membrane).
Journal ArticleDOI
Multistable Architected Materials for Trapping Elastic Strain Energy
Sicong Shan,Sung Hoon Kang,Sung Hoon Kang,Jordan R. Raney,Jordan R. Raney,Pai Wang,Lichen Fang,Francisco Candido,Jennifer A. Lewis,Jennifer A. Lewis,Katia Bertoldi +10 more
TL;DR: 3D printing and numerical analysis are combined to design a new class of architected materials that contain bistable beam elements and exhibit controlled trapping of elastic energy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Self-organization of a mesoscale bristle into ordered, hierarchical helical assemblies.
TL;DR: It is shown how spontaneous helicity can be induced in a synthetic polymeric nanobristle assembling in an evaporating liquid and can be controlled to yield highly ordered helical clusters with a unique structural hierarchy that arises from the sequential assembly of self-similar coiled building blocks over multiple length scales.
Journal ArticleDOI
Harvesting ambient wind energy with an inverted piezoelectric flag
Santiago Orrego,Kourosh Shoele,Kourosh Shoele,Andre Ruas,Kyle Doran,Brett Caggiano,Rajat Mittal,Sung Hoon Kang +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an experimental study of wind energy harvesting by self-sustained oscillations (flutter) of a flexible piezoelectric membrane fixed in a novel orientation called the "inverted flag" is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multifunctional ferrofluid-infused surfaces with reconfigurable multiscale topography
Wendong Wang,Wendong Wang,Jaako V.I. Timonen,Jaako V.I. Timonen,Andreas Carlson,Andreas Carlson,Dirk-Michael Drotlef,Cathy T. Zhang,Stefan Kolle,Alison Grinthal,Tak Sing Wong,Tak Sing Wong,Tak Sing Wong,Benjamin Hatton,Benjamin Hatton,Sung Hoon Kang,Sung Hoon Kang,Stephen Kennedy,Stephen Kennedy,Joshua Chi,Joshua Chi,Robert Thomas Blough,Metin Sitti,L. Mahadevan,Joanna Aizenberg +24 more
TL;DR: By infusing a ferrofluid into a microstructured matrix and applying a magnetic field, dynamic, multiscale topographical reconfigurations emerge, enabling functions such as colloidal self-assembly, switchable adhesion and friction, and biofilm removal.
