Tunneling spectroscopy has played a central role in the experimental verification of the microscopic theory of superconductivity in classical superconductors. Initial attempts to apply the same approach to high-temperature superconductors were hampered by various problems related to the complexity of these materials. The use of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS) on these compounds allowed the main difficulties to be overcome. This success motivated a rapidly growing scientific community to apply this technique to high-temperature superconductors. This paper reviews the experimental highlights obtained over the last decade. The crucial efforts to gain control over the technique and to obtain reproducible results are first recalled. Then a discussion on how the STM and STS techniques have contributed to the study of some of the most unusual and remarkable properties of high-temperature superconductors is presented: the unusually large gap values and the absence of scaling with the critical temperature, the pseudogap and its relation to superconductivity, the unprecedented small size of the vortex cores and its influence on vortex matter, the unexpected electronic properties of the vortex cores, and the combination of atomic resolution and spectroscopy leading to the observation of periodic local density of states modulations in the superconducting and pseudogap states and in the vortex cores.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of high-temperature superconductors

Using scanning tunneling microscopy in an ultrahigh vacuum and atomic force microscopy, we investigate the corrugation of graphene flakes deposited by exfoliation on a Si/SiO 2 (300 nm) surface. While the corrugation on SiO 2 is long range with a correlation length of about 25 nm, some of the graphene monolayers exhibit an additional corrugation with a preferential wavelength of about 15 nm. A detailed analysis shows that the long-range corrugation of the substrate is also visible on graphene, but with a reduced amplitude, leading to the conclusion that the graphene is partly freely suspended between hills of the substrate. Thus, the intrinsic rippling observed previously on artificially suspended graphene can exist as well, if graphene is deposited on SiO 2 .

Intrinsic and extrinsic corrugation of monolayer graphene deposited on SiO 2

An ultimate goal of spintronic research is the realization of concepts for atomic-scale all-spin-based devices. We combined bottom-up atomic fabrication with spin-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy to construct and read out atomic-scale model systems performing logic operations. Our concept uses substrate-mediated indirect exchange coupling to achieve logical interconnection between individual atomic spins. Combined with spin frustration, this concept enables various logical operations between inputs, such as NOT and OR.

Realizing all-spin-based logic operations atom by atom.

The miniaturization of magnetic devices toward the limit of single atoms calls for appropriate tools to study their magnetic properties. We demonstrate the ability to measure magnetization curves of individual magnetic atoms adsorbed on a nonmagnetic metallic substrate with use of a scanning tunneling microscope with a spin-polarized tip. We can map out low-energy magnetic interactions on the atomic scale as evidenced by the oscillating indirect exchange between a Co adatom and a nanowire on Pt(111). These results are important for the understanding of variations that are found in the magnetic properties of apparently identical adatoms because of different local environments.

Revealing magnetic interactions from single-atom magnetization curves.

Small clusters of magnetic atoms can behave in very different ways to those same atoms in bulk. Arranging iron atoms one by one into complex but well-defined patterns on a copper surface enables the construction of nanoscale magnetic structures with tailored characteristics.

Atom-by-atom engineering and magnetometry of tailored nanomagnets

We describe the design and development of a scanning tunneling micoscope (STM) working at very low temperatures in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and at high magnetic fields. The STM is mounted to the 3He pot of an entirely UHV compatible 3He refrigerator inside a tube which can be baked out to achieve UHV conditions even at room temperature. A base temperature of 315 mK with a hold time of 30 h without any recondensing or refilling of cryogenics is achieved. The STM can be moved from the cryostat into a lower UHV-chamber system where STM-tips and -samples can be exchanged without breaking UHV. The chambers contain standard surface science tools for preparation and characterization of tips and samples in particular for spin-resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Test measurements using either superconducting tips or samples show that the system is adequate for performing STS with both high spatial and high energy resolution. The vertical stability of the tunnel junction is shown to be 5 pmpp and the energy resolution is about 100 μeV.
