In this review, we describe the recent advances in supramolecular helical assemblies formed from chiral and achiral small molecules, oligomers (foldamers), and helical and nonhelical polymers from the viewpoints of their formations with unique chiral phenomena, such as amplification of chirality during the dynamic helically assembled processes, properties, and specific functionalities, some of which have not been observed in or achieved by biological systems. In addition, a brief historical overview of the helical assemblies of small molecules and remarkable progress in the synthesis of single-stranded and multistranded helical foldamers and polymers, their properties, structures, and functions, mainly since 2009, will also be described.

Supramolecular Helical Systems: Helical Assemblies of Small Molecules, Foldamers, and Polymers with Chiral Amplification and Their Functions

Summary: Poly(lactide)s [i.e. poly(lactic acid) (PLA)] and lactide copolymers are biodegradable, compostable, producible from renewable resources, and nontoxic to the human body and the environment. They have been used as biomedical materials for tissue regeneration, matrices for drug delivery systems, and alternatives for commercial polymeric materials to reduce the impact on the environment. Since stereocomplexation or stereocomplex formation between enantiomeric PLA, poly(L-lactide) [i.e. poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)] and poly(D-lactide) [i.e. poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA)] was reported in 1987, numerous studies have been carried out with respect to the formation, structure, properties, degradation, and applications of the PLA stereocomplexes. Stereocomplexation enhances the mechanical properties, the thermal-resistance, and the hydrolysis-resistance of PLA-based materials. These improvements arise from a peculiarly strong interaction between L-lactyl unit sequences and D-lactyl unit sequences, and stereocomplexation opens a new way for the preparation of biomaterials such as hydrogels and particles for drug delivery systems. It was revealed that the crucial parameters affecting stereocomplexation are the mixing ratio and the molecular weight of L-lactyl and D-lactyl unit sequences. On the other hand, PDLA was found to form a stereocomplex with L-configured polypeptides in 2001. This kind of stereocomplexation is called “hetero-stereocomplexation” and differentiated from “homo-stereocomplexation” between L-lactyl and D-lactyl unit sequences. This paper reviews the methods for tracing PLA stereocomplexation, the methods for inducing PLA stereocompelxation, the parameters affecting PLA stereocomplexation, and the structure, properties, degradation, and applications of a variety of stereocomplexed PLA materials.

The entanglement concept in polymer rheology

The free-volume model, which has been useful for describing the behavior of the viscosity $\ensuremath{\eta}$ of dense liquids and glasses, is extended to account for their thermodynamic behavior as well. Experimental results for the heat capacity ${C}_{p}$ and the volume $\overline{v}$ show that the system falls out of complete, metastable thermodynamic equilibrium at the glass transition temperature ${T}_{g}$. As a first step in understanding these universal phenomena, a theory of the underlying metastable phase, the amorphous phase, is developed. Recent molecular-dynamic calculations demonstrating the existence of a cellular structure in liquids and the properties of the local free energy of the molecular cells permit us to formulate more precisely and justify in more detail the standard free-volume model. In particular, it is possible to define the free volume and distinguish solid-like and liquidlike cells. This leads to the introduction of percolation theory, which is used to describe the gradual development of the communal entropy of the amorphous phase. We then determine the probability distribution of the cellular volume as a function of the fraction of liquidlike cells, $p$. The equilibrium liquid-glass transition is associated with the increase of $p$ with temperature. This occurs via a phase transition which is most probably first order. The results of our theory give a generalized equation for the viscosity which agrees accurately with experimental results at all temperatures. Results for ${C}_{p}$ and $\overline{v}$ are also obtained. This equilibrium theory can provide the basis for a relaxation theory of the kinetic effects observed around and below ${T}_{g}$. The relationship between the entropy theory and the free-volume model is also clarified.

Liquid-glass transition, a free-volume approach

“Life is branched” was the motto of a special issue of Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics1 on “Branched Polymers”, indicating that branching is of similar importance in the world of synthetic macromolecules as it is in nature. The significance of branched macromolecules has evolved over the last 30 years from just being considered as a side reaction in polymerization or as a precursor step in the formation of networks. Important to this change in perception of branching was the concept of “polymer architectures”, which formed on new starand graft-branched structures in the 1980s and then in the early 1990s on dendrimers and dendritic polymers. Today, clearly, controlled branching is considered to be a major aspect in the design of macromolecules and functional material. Hyperbranched (hb) polymers are a special type of dendritic polymers and have as a common feature a very high branching density with the potential of branching in each repeating unit. They are usually prepared in a one-pot synthesis, which limits the control on molar mass and branching accuracy and leads to “heterogeneous” products with a distribution in molar mass and branching. This distinguishes hyperbranched polymers from perfectly branched and monodisperse dendrimers. In the last 20 years, both classes of dendritic polymers, dendrimers as well as hb polymers, have attracted major attention because of their interesting properties resulting from the branched architecture as well as the high number of functional groups.2 The challenging synthesis of the dendrimers attracted especially scientists with a strong organic chemistry background and led to beautifully designed macromolecules, which allowed a deeper insight into the effect of branching and functionality. Dendrimers have been considered as perfect “nano-objects” where one can control perfectly size and functionality, which is of high interest in nanotechnology and biomedicine. hb polymers, however, were considered from the beginning as products suitable for larger-scale application in typical polymer fields like coatings and resins, where a perfect structure is sacrificed for an easy and affordable synthetic route. Thus, the first structures that were reported paralleled the chemistry used for linear polymers like typical polycondensation for polyester synthesis. More recently, unconventional synthetic methods have been adopted also for hb polymers and related structures. Presently, a vast variety of highly branched structures have been realized and studied regarding their properties and potential application fields. Treatment of Intrinsic Viscosities

Experimental results on the molecular weight dependence of the glass temperature (To), bulk viscosity g, viscosity-temperature coeficient (ET), and specific volume (v) for fractionated polystyrenes were presented in previous publications.' Subsequently, it was shown that the relationship used to calculate the molecular weights ( M ) of the fractions from their intrinsic viscosities in benzene a t 30\" was in error for values of M < 30,000.293 The data are therefore re-examined here and the previously reported empirical equations relating the above properties to molecular weight and temperature are re-expressed in terms of a revised molecular weight scale. The results of more recent investigations are also discussed. Molecular weights of the polystyrene fractions were calculated previously from their intrinsic viscosities, [g], at 30\" in freshly distilled benzene, using the relationship of E ~ a r t : ~ log Mu = (log [g] + 4.013)/0.74 ( M > 3 X lo4) (1)
