Ammonium nitrate (AN) has received attraction globally not only as a nitrogenous fertilizer but also as an oxidizer in gas generators and propellants. Nowadays, great attention is being focused on the development of composite solid propellants with green oxidizers in realizing eco–friendly combustion products. The ammonium perchlorate (AP), which is the work horse oxidizer in composite propellant, needs replacement due to its environmental and human health issues. In this context, AN is regarded as an alternative to AP because of its easy availability and environmentally friendly chlorine free combustion products. Ammonium Nitrate as an Eco-Friendly Oxidizer for Composite Solid Propellants: Promises and Challenges

Energetic materials are substances that can store chemical energy in their chemical bonds. An ideal energetic material is a substance with high performance, safety and shelf life. Many recent researches have concentrated on the synthesis or the development of new energetic materials with optimized properties, such as thermal stability, sensitivity and burn rate. The reduction of the particle size of energetic materials from micron to nano-sized is one of the suitable approaches for obtaining desirable properties. Recent progress on the reduction of the particle size of energetic materials is reviewed in this work. The effects of nano-sized particles on the performance of energetic compounds are also investigated.

The Advantages and Shortcomings of Using Nano-sized Energetic Materials

Interaction of powdery Al, Zr and Ti with atmospheric nitrogen and subsequent nitride formation under the metal powder combustion in air

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the combustion of composite solid propellants with a double oxidizer (ammonium perchlorate/HMX) at pressures of 0.03–0.1 MPa. Systems containing a micron-sized aluminum powder (ASD-4) and the Alex ultrafine aluminum powder were investigated. It was shown that the replacement of ASD-4 by Alex in propellant systems led to an increase in the burning rate. The aluminum particle size and the oxidizer excess coefficient were found to affect the exponent in the power-law burning-rate dependence. The range of the oxidizer excess coefficient was determined that corresponded to the effective replacement of micron-sized aluminum by ultrafine aluminum for which the exponent in the power-law burning rate dependence decreases.

Effect of ultrafine aluminum on the combustion of composite solid propellants at subatmospheric pressures

Experimental results on the stationary burning rate and solid content in the combustion products of mixed compositions with a chlorine-free oxidizer and an active fuel binder in the pressure range 0.025–6.0 MPa are presented. The effect of catalytic additives (silica and carbon black), the particle size of aluminum powder, and the method of preparing samples for combustion of the mixed compositions under consideration are analyzed.
