Tungsten wire-array Z-pinch experiments at 200 TW and 2 MJ
R. B. Spielman,C. Deeney,Gordon A. Chandler,Melissa Douglas,D. L. Fehl,Maurice Keith Matzen,Dillon H. McDaniel,Thomas J. Nash,John L. Porter,T. W. L. Sanford,J. F. Seamen,William A. Stygar,Kenneth W. Struve,S. P. Breeze,J. S. McGurn,Jose A. Torres,D. M. Zagar,T. L. Gilliland,D. O. Jobe,John Lee McKenney,R. C. Mock,M. Vargas,T. C. Wagoner,D.L. Peterson +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a 60 TW/5 MJ electrical accelerator located at Sandia National Laboratories to implode tungsten wire-array Z pinches, which achieved an x-ray power of ∼200 TW and an xray energy of nearly 2 MJ.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improved Symmetry Greatly Increases X-Ray Power from Wire-Array Z -Pinches
T. W. L. Sanford,G. O. Allshouse,B.M. Marder,Thomas J. Nash,R.C. Mock,R. B. Spielman,J. F. Seamen,J. S. McGurn,D. Jobe,T. L. Gilliland,M. Vargas,Kenneth W. Struve,William A. Stygar,M.R. Douglas,Maurice Keith Matzen,James H. Hammer,J. S. De Groot,J. L. Eddleman,D.L. Peterson,D. Mosher,K.G. Whitney,J.W. Thornhill,P. E. Pulsifer,John P. Apruzese,Yitzhak Maron +24 more
TL;DR: A systematic experimental study of annular aluminum-wire Z-pinches on a 20-TW electrical generator shows that the measured spatial characteristics and emitted x-ray power agree more closely with rad-hydro simulations when large numbers of wires are used.
Journal ArticleDOI
Power enhancement by increasing the initial array radius and wire number of tungsten Z pinches
Christopher Deeney,Thomas J. Nash,R. B. Spielman,J. F. Seaman,G.C. Chandler,Kenneth W. Struve,John L. Porter,William A. Stygar,J. S. McGurn,D. O. Jobe,T. L. Gilliland,Jose A. Torres,M. Vargas,L. E. Ruggles,S. P. Breeze,R. C. Mock,M.R. Douglas,D. L. Fehl,Dillon H. McDaniel,Maurice Keith Matzen,D.L. Peterson,W. Matuska,N. F. Roderick,Joseph J. MacFarlane +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, a 12.5mm-diam array was optimized to produce 75{plus_minus}10TW of x rays with total energy outputs of 450{plus-minus}50kJ.
Journal ArticleDOI
X-ray emission from z pinches at 10 7 A: current scaling, gap closure, and shot-to-shot fluctuations.
William A. Stygar,H. C. Ives,D. L. Fehl,M. E. Cuneo,Michael G. Mazarakis,James E. Bailey,G. R. Bennett,David E. Bliss,Gordon A. Chandler,R. J. Leeper,Maurice Keith Matzen,Dillon H. McDaniel,J. S. TL;DR: Three-dimensional radiative-magnetohydrodynamic simulations be performed to quantify the sensitivity of the x-ray emission to various initial conditions, and to determine whether an imploding z pinch is a spatiotemporal chaotic system.
Journal ArticleDOI
High-temperature dynamic hohlraums on the pulsed power driver Z
Thomas J. Nash,M. S. Derzon,Gordon A. Chandler,R. J. Leeper,D. L. Fehl,J. S. Lash,Chimpén Ruiz,Gary Wayne Cooper,J. F. Seaman,J. S. McGurn,S. Lazier,Jose A. Torres,D. O. Jobe,T. L. Gilliland,M. J. Hurst,R. C. Mock,P. Ryan,D. S. Nielsen,J. Armijo,John Lee McKenney,R. Hawn,D. E. Hebron,Joseph J. MacFarlane,D. Petersen,R.L. Bowers,W. Matuska,D. D. Ryutov +26 more
TL;DR: In the concept of dynamic hohlraum, an imploding Z pinch is optically thick to its own radiation as mentioned in this paper, and the radiation may be trapped inside the pinch by colliding an outer Z-pinch liner onto an inner liner.
