TL;DR: The Z accelerator at Sandia National Laboratories delivers ∼20MA load currents to create high magnetic fields (>1000T) and high pressures (megabar to gigabar) in a z-pinch configuration, the magnetic pressure supersonically implodes a plasma created from a cylindrical wire array, which at stagnation typically generates a plasma with energy densities of about 10MJ∕cm3 and temperatures >1keV at 0.1% of solid density as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Architecture of petawatt-class z-pinch accelerators.
William A. Stygar,M. E. Cuneo,Daniel Headley,H. C. Ives,R. J. Leeper,Michael G. Mazarakis,Craig L. Olson,John L. Porter,T. C. Wagoner,Joseph Ray Woodworth +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, an accelerator architecture that can serve as the basis of the design of petawatt-class $z$-pinch drivers is presented. But it does not include intermediate store transmission lines, multimegavolt gas switches, or a laser trigger system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Integrated simulation of the generation and transport of proton beams from laser-target interaction
TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid particle-in-cell (HPC) code is used to simulate the laser-plasmas interaction and its effect on the electron production and transport, as well as the distributed acceleration and spatial distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characteristics and scaling of tungsten-wire-array z -pinch implosion dynamics at 20 MA.
