The local distortion and electronic behavior in Mn doped BiFeO3

Enhancement of magnetic and electric properties in multiferroic Mn-substituted BiFeO3 thin films (BiFe1− x Mn x O3 with x = 0.00–0.05) grown via the low-temperature chemical solution deposition process on low-cost substrates like indium tin oxide (ITO)/glass and silicon is reported in this work. A detailed structural analysis by high-resolution X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicates that the grown films exhibit rhombohedral distorted perovskite structure without any impure phase. Raman spectroscopic analysis shows all 13 Raman active (4A1 + 9E) phonon modes corresponding to distorted rhombohedral BFO R3c structure. BFO thin film with 5% Mn substitution showed maximum saturation and remnant magnetisation (M s = 16.70 emu/g and M r = 2.58 emu/g) and remarkably reduced leakage current due to distortion in the spin cycloid structure and suppression of oxygen vacancies due to partial replacement of Fe3+ ion by Mn3+ ion, respectively. Raman spectroscopy of nanocrystalline Mn-doped BiFeO3thin films

The 12% Cerium (Ce) and 10% Manganese (Mn) were doped at A and B sites respectively in BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films along with incorporation of 5% excess Bi. Pure and undoped BFO thin film capacitors are fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated corning glass and silicon substrate by chemical solution deposition (CSD) method. Film becomes preferred oriented along (110) directions with introduction of Mn and Ce in the host BFO lattice. Leakage current density is reduced by about 4 orders from (4.59 × 10−3 A/cm2) to about 2.91 × 10−7 A/cm2 at 100 KV/cm field after 12% Ce doping in BFO (BCFO) thin film. Enhanced ferroelectric response with saturated P-E loop is observed for BCFO thin film in compare to that obtained for 10% Mn doped BFO (BFMO) thin film. Improved capacitance-voltage characteristics with good butterfly loop is obtained for Bi0.88Ce0.12FeO3 thin film, indicating an increased degree of ferroelectricity. Major ways to improve the magnetic and electrical properties of promising multiferroic BiFeO3 and optimize its synthesis have been studied, and its applications in spintronics, photonics, and magnonics have been discussed.

Magnetic and electrical properties of multiferroic BiFeO3, its synthesis and applications

BiFeO3 is a multiferroic material showing antiferromagnetic ordering and ferroelectric behavior simultaneously. Here, Mn-doped BiFeO3 nanoparticles were synthesized up to 10% of Mn composition by a sol-gel process. The samples showed high crystallinity with no secondary phase up to 2% of Mn doping. A phonon peak at 1250 cm−1 in undoped BiFeO3 showed anomalous intensity enhancement in the magnetically ordered phase below TN = 643 K due to a spin-phonon coupling. This behavior was less pronounced in the Mn-doped samples, suggesting a suppression of magnetic ordering between Fe spins by Mn doping.

Synthesis and Characterization of Mn-Doped BiFeO3 Nanoparticles

There has been increasing interest in the so-called multiferroic materials, showing unique features due to coexistence of two or more ferroic orderings (ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity). For example, coexistence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism may yield a magnetoelectric effect: the magnetization is controlled by the applied electric field. Such materials may lead us to future innovative electronic devices. BiFeO3 is a very promising candidate from this point of view because it shows ferroelectric and weak ferromagnetic orderings above room temperature simultaneously (Curie temperature TC = 1103 K and Néel temperature TN = 643 K) [1–3]. Recently, growth technique of BiFeO3 thin films have gathered much attention because pulsed laser deposition (PLD) provided films with excellent ferroelectric properties compared to bulk samples [4, 5]. Chemical solution deposition is another attractive candidate for low-cost and efficient growth of BiFeO3 films [6]. To elucidate the potential for future device production, we were studying basic properties of BiFeO3 films prepared by chemical solution deposition. We have recently revealed by surface morphology observation that the films consisted of two different phases with dimensions of μm, changing with the Bi/Fe ratio in the precursor solution [7, 8]. We have demonstrated there that micro Raman scattering is a very powerful technique to investigate lattice properties of the two μm-sized regions separately. In this study, we will characterize crystallinity of these regions in detail by micro Raman scattering as a function of Bi/Fe ratios.
