Performance-based health monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics for condition-based maintenance of gas turbines: A review

Mass injection upstream of the tip of a high-speed axial compressor rotor is a stabilityenhancement approach known to be effective in suppressing stall in tip-critical rotors.This process is examined in a transonic axial compressor rotor through experiments andtime-averaged Navier-Stokes CFD simulations. Measurements and simulations for dis-crete injection are presented for a range of injection rates and distributions of injectorsaround the annulus. The simulations indicate that tip injection increases stability byunloading the rotor tip and that increasing injection velocity improves the effectiveness oftip injection. For the tested rotor, experimental results demonstrate that at 70 percentspeed the stalling ﬂow coefﬁcient can be reduced by 30 percent using an injected mass-ﬂow equivalent to 1 percent of the annulus ﬂow. At design speed, the stalling ﬂow coef-ﬁcient was reduced by 6 percent using an injected massﬂow equivalent to 2 percent of theannulus ﬂow. The experiments show that stability enhancement is related to the mass-averaged axial velocity at the tip. For a given injected massﬂow, the mass-averaged axialvelocity at the tip is increased by injecting ﬂow over discrete portions of the circumfer-ence as opposed to full-annular injection. Compressor Stability Enhancement Using Discrete Tip Injection

At low mass flow rates, axial compressors suffer from flow instabilities leading to stall and surge. The inception process of these instabilities has been widely researched in the past---primarily with the aim of predicting or averting stall onset. In recent times, attention has shifted to conditions well before stall and has focused on the level of irregularity in the blade passing signature in the rotor tip region. In general, the irregularity increases in intensity as the flow rate through the compressor is reduced. Attempts have been made to develop stall warning/avoidance procedures based on the level of flow irregularity, but little effort has been made to characterize the irregularity itself, or to understand its underlying cause. Work on this project has revealed for the first time that the increase in irregularity in the blade passing signature is highly dependent on both tip-clearance size and eccentricity. In a compressor with small, uniform, tip-clearance, the increase in blade passing irregularity that accompanies a reduction in flow rate will be modest. If the tip-clearance is enlarged, however, there will be a sharp rise in irregularity at all circumferential locations. In a compressor with eccentric tip-clearance, the increase in irregularity will only occur in the part of the annulus where the tip-clearance is largest, regardless of the average clearance level. In this paper, some attention is also given to the question of whether the irregularity observed in the prestall flow field is due to random turbulence or to some form of coherent flow structure. Detailed flow measurements reveal that the latter is the case. From these findings, it is clear that a stall warning system based on blade passing signature irregularity would be difficult to implement in an aero-engine where tip-clearance size and eccentricity change during each flight cycle and over the life of the compressor. © 2013 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Stall Warning by Blade Pressure Signature Analysis

▪ Abstract The compression system instabilities known as surge and rotating stall are natural limits to the performance of all compressors and are especially troubling in gas turbine engines. In the last 15 years, rapid progress has been made in understanding this complex problem through the application of control technology; in particular, system identification techniques have proven to be useful. New findings include the roles of compressibility and nonlinearity in the stall-inception process. These findings have been used to implement feedback control schemes that have achieved increased stability in a variety of compressors and engines. Approaches fall into one of two categories: (a) operating range extension through active damping of linear disturbances, or (b) manipulation of the nonlinear system dynamics to maintain the operating point close to the instability boundary in the presence of disturbances seen in operation.

Compression system stability and active control

This paper provides a discussion on how degradation develops and affects the performance of the gas turbine. Because the function of a gas turbine is the result of the fine-tuned cooperation of many different components, the emphasis of this paper is on the gas turbine and its components as a system. Therefore, the interaction of components is studied in detail. An engine model is subjected to various types of degradation, and the effect on operating parameters is studied. The focus is on three areas: How does component degradation impact the operating points of the engine compressor, how does component degradation impact full load and part load gas turbine performance characteristics, and how does component degradation impact measurable engine operating parameters. Experimental data are provided that supports the theoretical conclusion. Parameters that indicate levels of degradation are outlined, thus providing guidance for condition monitoring practice.

Degradation Effects on Industrial Gas Turbines

The effects of circumferentially nonuniform tip clearance on axial compressor performance and stability have been investigated experimentally and analytically. A theoretical model for compressor behavior with nonaxisymmetric tip clearance has been developed and used to design a series of first-of-a-kind experiments on a four-stage, low-speed compressor. The experiments and computational results together show clearly the central physical features and controlling parameters of compressor response to nonaxisymmetric tip clearance. It was found that the loss in stall margin was more severe than that estimated based on average clearance. The stall point was, in fact, closer to that obtained with uniform clearance at the maximum clearance level. The circumferential length scale of the tip clearance (and accompanying flow asymmetry) was an important factor in determining the stall margin reduction. For the same average clearance, the loss in peak pressure rise was 50 percent higher for an asymmetry with fundamental wavelength equal to the compressor circumference than with wavelength equal to one-half the circumference. The clearance asymmetry had much less of an effect on peak efficiency; the measured maximum efficiency decrease obtained was less than 0.4 percent compared to the 8 percent decrease in peak pressure rise due to the asymmetric clearance. The efficiency penalty due to nonaxisymmetric tip clearance was thus close to that obtained with a uniform clearance at the circumferentially averaged level. The theoretical model accurately captured the decreases in both steady-state pressure rise and stable operating range which are associated with clearance asymmetry. It also gave a good description of the observed trends of: (i) increasing velocity asymmetry with decreasing compressor flow, and (ii) decreasing effect of clearance asymmetry with decreasing dominant wavelength of the clearance distribution. The time-resolved data showed that the spatial structure of the prestall propagating disturbances in the compressor annulus was well represented and that the stability limiting process could be linked to the unsteady structure of these disturbance modes. The model was also utilized for parametric studies to define how compressor performance and stability are affected by the circumferential distribution of clearance, steady-state compressor pressure-rise characteristic, and system dynamic parameters. Sensitivity to clearance asymmetry was found to fall off strongly with the (asymmetry-related) reduced frequency and to increase with peak pressure rise and increasing curvature of the characteristic near the peak.
