Progress in optical networking has stimulated interest in optical performance monitoring (OPM), particularly regarding signal quality measures such as optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), Q-factor, and dispersion. These advanced monitoring methods have the potential to extend fault management and quality-of-service (QoS) monitoring into the optical domain. This paper reviews OPM applications and techniques, while examining the role of OPM as an enabling technology for advances in high-speed and optically switched networks.

Optical performance monitoring

This book, published in 2007, provides comprehensive coverage of the theory and practice of OPAs and related devices, including fiber optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). After introducing the field, the theory and techniques behind all types of fiber OPAs are covered starting from first principles - topics include the scalar and vector OPA theory; the nonlinear Schrodinger equation; OPO theory; and quantum noise figure of fiber OPAs. Challenges of making fiber OPAs practical for a number of applications are discussed, and a survey of the state-of-the-art in feasibility demonstrations and performance evaluations is provided. The capabilities and limitations of OPAs; the potential applications for OPAs and OPOs, and prospects for future developments in the field are discussed. Theoretical tools developed in this text can also be applied to other areas of nonlinear optics. This is a valuable resource for researchers, advanced practitioners, and graduate students in optoelectronics.

Optical performance monitoring for the next generation optical communication networks

We demonstrate optical performance monitoring of in-band optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and residual dispersion, at bit rates of 40Gb/s, 160Gb/s and 640Gb/s, using slow-light enhanced optical third harmonic generation (THG) in a compact (80µm) dispersion engineered 2D silicon photonic crystal waveguide. We show that there is no intrinsic degradation in the enhancement of the signal processing at 640Gb/s relative to that at 40Gb/s, and that this device should operate well above 1Tb/s. This work represents a record 16-fold increase in processing speed for a silicon device, and opens the door for slow light to play a key role in ultra-high bandwidth telecommunications systems.

Optical signal processing on a silicon chip at 640Gb/s using slow-light

This paper presents an all-optical, in-band optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and chromatic dispersion monitor. We demonstrate monitoring over the 1 nm bandwidth of our signal, which is a 10 GHz pulse train of 8.8 ps pulses. The monitor output power, as measured on a slow detector, has a 1.9 dB dynamic range when the signal OSNR is varied by 20 dB, and a 1.6 dB dynamic range when ±150 ps/nm of chromatic dispersion is applied. Cascaded four-wave mixing occurring in the optical parametric amplifier provides the nonlinear power transfer function responsible for the monitoring. An analysis using the signals’ probability density functions show that the nonlinear power transfer function provides preferential gain to clean undispersed pulses when compared to noisy and/or dispersed pulses. Our analysis includes a consideration of the applicability of the device to high duty cycle systems, and simulations on monitoring of a 40 Gb/s pulse train with a 50% duty cycle.
