The Bonn Meson Exchange Model for the Nucleon Nucleon Interaction

Nuclear forces can be systematically derived using effective chiral Lagrangians consistent with the symmetries of QCD. I review the status of the calculations for two- and three-nucleon forces and their applications in few-nucleon systems. I also address issues like the quark mass dependence of the nuclear forces and resonance saturation for four-nucleon operators.

Nowadays it has become customary in nuclear physics to denote by “tradition” the approach that considers nucleons and mesons as the relevant degrees of freedom. It is the purpose of this chapter to review this “traditional” approach in the area of nuclear forces and their applications to nuclear structure.

Neutron star observations: Prognosis for equation of state constraints

The Nijmegen NSC89 and the most recent NSC97 hyperon-nucleon potentials are adopted to study the structures of hypernuclei. Investigations are concentrated on the hypernucleus ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ by using our two-frequency shell-model folded-diagram approach. We first calculate the $\mathrm{YN}$ G matrix with an exact Pauli exclusion operator. The nucleon frequency for the harmonic oscillator basis wave function is chosen from the empirical formula $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{N}{=45A}^{\ensuremath{-}1/3}\ensuremath{-}{25A}^{\ensuremath{-}2/3},$ while the hyperon one is obtained as the frequency when the lowest hyperon single-particle energy in the hypernucleus reaches a saturation minimum. The energy-independent effective interaction ${V}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is then obtained from the $\mathrm{YN}$ G matrix elements, using a $\mathrm{Q\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}$-box folded-diagram framework. We will examine how our calculated spectra vary via these different versions of the realistic hyperon-nucleon potentials. Special attention is drawn on the contribution of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}N\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Sigma}N$ coupling diagram. Although this diagram contributes significantly to ${V}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ in most cases, it does not alter much to the final spectrum.

Hypernucleus Λ 40 Ca and recent hyperon-nucleon potentials

We study a cubic lattice gas model for nuclear matter where each lattice site can be either occupied, by one proton or one neutron, or unoccupied. A nearest-neighbor interaction of the form $ - \sum_{ } J_{ij}\tau_{zi} \tau_{zj}$ is assumed. Our model is an isospin-1 Ising model, with ${\tau_z}$ = (1,0,-1) representing respectively (proton, vacancy, neutron). 
A kinetic-energy term has been included in our model. Under the Bragg-Williams mean field approximation our model exhibits the existence of a dense phase (liquid-like) and a rare phase (gas-like). The nuclear-matter p-v isotherms given by our model are discussed.
