The time-dependent treatment of a three-level atom in the V configuration confined in an optical cavity as well as the dynamics of the cavity field in two different regimes, in the presence and absence of the nonlinear mirror, has been discussed. The time-dependent infinite coupled differential equations of motion are solved by the matrix continued fraction method. In deriving the numerical inverse Laplace transform, the quotient difference algorithm and the fast Fourier transform have been applied. The nonlinear effects of the system over the time evolution of the population inversion, the mean photon number and the second-order correlation function for some dimensionless parameters are delineated. Ultimately the reduction of the three-level atom to an effective two-level one under specific conditions and in a weak-driving limit has been performed.

An eikonal approximation for non linear resonators exhibiting bistability

In this paper, we study a laser using a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon as a cavity mirror. First, using the semiclassical laser theory and the differential equation for the lossy nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon, we develop dynamic equations describing this system for single-mode operation. In this model, the frequency-pulling effect, a finite response time of the nonlinear medium, and a finite-cavity round-trip time of the Fabry-Perot etalon are included. Second, based on this model, we analyze the stability of this laser and give some numerical results. Our results show that 1) this system can exist in the stable state and in the unstable state; 2) there are not only saddle-node bifurcations but also Hopf bifurcations; 3) the detuning parameter will effect the characteristics of the bistability and the number and distribution of Hopf bifurcation points. >

Dynamic model and stability analysis of a laser using a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon as a cavity mirror

Two-mode operation in a laser with nonlinear mirror

We put forward a new method for improving the output power stability of a cw laser. The basic idea is to replace the output mirror of a laser with a nonlinear mirror that is formed by a dispersive nonlinear Fabry–Perot etalon. Based on the semiclassical dynamic model for this system, first we derive the static conditions for this laser operating with stabilized output power, then we study the dynamic responses of output power to gain fluctuations. Both static and dynamic results show that, compared with normal lasers, the output power stability of our laser can be improved significantly when the output power fluctuations are caused by the fluctuations of the gain. The improvement of the output power can be explained by the fact that there exists an optical servoloop in this laser that is produced by the nonlinear mirror.

Laser with a nonlinear mirror: application for improving the output power stability of a cw laser.

In this paper we show that a multistable laser is realizable by the use of a nonlinear medium as one of the resonant cavity mirrors. Using the semiclassical laser theory we derive a gain function with many maxima. The resulting gain equation has many real solutions. We discuss the possible application in switching by use of a suitable external perturbation.
