TL;DR: Hydrothermal treatment of the well-known aluminum polycation varepsilon-Al(13) produces the novel Al(30) structure, the largest polycation yet observed, and its characterization by X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy solved previously unassigned signals in (27)Al N MR spectra of other Al - O species.
Abstract: Simple hydrothermal treatment of the well-known aluminum polycation varepsilon-Al(13) produces the novel Al(30) structure (see picture), the largest polycation yet observed. Its characterization, by X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy, also solved previously unassigned signals in (27)Al NMR spectra of other Al - O species.

TL;DR: Aluminosilicate zeolites such as UTD-1 (structure shown) belong to a family of nanoporous inorganic materials that find utility in catalysis, separation, and ion exchange.
Abstract: Aluminosilicate zeolites such as UTD-1 (structure shown) belong to a family of nanoporous inorganic materials that find utility in catalysis, separation, and ion exchange. During the last decade, the rate of discovery of new open-framework materials based, for example, on phosphates, sulfides, halides, nitrides, and coordination compounds has increased dramatically. The synthesis, structures, and properties of this remarkable class of materials are reviewed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the anionic chains of corner-sharing GaO4F2 octahedra linked together via fluorine and PO4 tetrahedra, the topology of which is the same as in the aluminophosphate mineral tancoite, were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
Abstract: Compounds containing the one-dimensional macroanion [Ga(HPO4)2F]2- have been synthesized using ambient and moderate solvothermal conditions, and their interconversion and reactivity studied. The anionic chains exist in the hydrated gallium fluorophosphate (1) Ga(HPO4)2F·(NH3(CH2)3NH3)·2H2O, synthesized at room temperature from an aqueous reaction. Heating 1 in air at 70 °C gives the dehydrated form 2 or Ga(HPO4)2F·(NH3(CH2)3NH3). 2 can also be solvothermally prepared at 120 °C from a water/DMF mixture and has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It is orthorhombic (space group Pbcm (no. 57), a = 8.642(2) A, b = 19.346(13) A, c = 7.114(4) A, V = 1189.3(11) A3), and refined to R1(F) = 0.0384 and wR2(F2) = 0.0704 for reflections with I > 2σ(I). Both the structures contain anionic chains of corner-sharing GaO4F2 octahedra linked together via fluorine and PO4 tetrahedra, the topology of which is the same as in the aluminophosphate mineral tancoite. Both 1 and 2 when heated with water under h...

TL;DR: In this paper, a new fluorinated gallium phosphate has been synthesized under mild solvothermal condition using a mixed water-dimethylformamide solvent, which has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
Abstract: A new fluorinated gallium phosphate has been synthesized under mild solvothermal condition using a mixed water–dimethylformamide solvent. It has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Ga3(PO4)3F3·N2C3H12·NC2H7 (MIL-30), obtained at 180 °C (3 days), crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121 (no. 19), a = 8.8107(2), b = 10.2258(2), c = 20.9082(3) A, V = 1883.75(6) A3. The structure is built up from layers of corner linked hexameric Ga3(PO4)3F3 units separated by protonated 1,3-diaminopropane and dimethylamine (coming from the decomposition of the co-solvent dimethylformamide). The hexamer consists of GaO4F2 octahedra, GaO4F trigonal bipyramids and PO4 tetrahedra which share corners. Within the layer, the connection mode of the hexameric building unit is similar to that found in the three-dimensional open-framework ULM-3.

TL;DR: The formation mechanisms of microporous materials synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions are still not elucidated and it is necessary to utilize in situ characterizations for gaining information and new insights concerning the chemical processes which take place within the cell as discussed by the authors.

Abstract: A new open-framework fluorinated gallium phosphate (MIL-31)
containing the
Ga9(PO4)9(H2O)(OH)(OH,F)4
5− anion was hydrothermally synthesized by using
long alkyl chain diamines (C9 and C10) as
structure-directing agents; its crystal structure is built up from
hexameric units and exhibits large one-dimensional hexagonal channels
delimited by 18-rings.
