Understanding and Managing Freshwater Recreational Fisheries as Complex Adaptive Social-Ecological Systems
Robert Arlinghaus,Josep Alós,Ben Beardmore,Katrin Daedlow,Malte Dorow,Marie Fujitani,Daniel Hühn,Wolfgang Haider,Len M. Hunt,Brett M. Johnson,Fiona D Johnston,Thomas Klefoth,Shuichi Matsumura,Christopher T. Monk,Thilo Pagel,John R. Post,Tobias Rapp,Carsten Riepe,Hillary G.M. Ward,Christian Wolter +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the state of knowledge on the science and management of freshwater recreational fisheries is reviewed, with the objective of integrating insights from disparate fields such as fisheries science, environmental complexity theory, common-pool-resource theory, and resilience theory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Species‐specific preferences of German recreational anglers for freshwater fishing experiences, with emphasis on the intrinsic utilities of fish stocking and wild fishes
Robert Arlinghaus,Robert Arlinghaus,Ben Beardmore,Carsten Riepe,Jürgen Meyerhoff,Thilo Pagel +5 more
TL;DR: It was concluded that the previously documented large appreciation of fish stocking by anglers may be indicative of an underlying preference for sufficiently high catches rather than reflect an intrinsic preference for stocking or the catching of wild fishes per se.
Journal ArticleDOI
How ecological processes shape the outcomes of stock enhancement and harvest regulations in recreational fisheries.
Fiona D. Johnston,Fiona D. Johnston,Micheal S. Allen,Ben Beardmore,Carsten Riepe,Thilo Pagel,Daniel Hühn,Robert Arlinghaus,Robert Arlinghaus +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that size- and density-dependent processes, and broadly the degree of natural recruitment, drive the biological, social, and economic outcomes of popular management actions in recreational fisheries.
Journal ArticleDOI
The battle between harvest and natural selection creates small and shy fish
Christopher T. Monk,Dorte Bekkevold,Thomas Klefoth,Thilo Pagel,Miquel Palmer,Robert Arlinghaus,Robert Arlinghaus +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the strength and shape of harvest selection to natural selection on body size over four years and behavior over one year in a natural population of a freshwater top predator, the northern pike (Esox lucius).
Journal ArticleDOI
Impacts of External and Surgery-Based Tagging Techniques on Small Northern Pike Under Field Conditions
TL;DR: The impacts of fin clipping, PIT tags, and three external tags (T-bar anchor, opercular, and streamer tags) on age-0 Northern Pike in a pond examined and surgically implanted transmitters reduced the growth of small adult Northern Pike with total leukaemia.
