Impacts of rigid spherical nose shaped missiles on concrete beams are simulated with a discrete element method The history of the structural damage of the beam is followed from the very first crushing and fracturing processes to the ultimate fragmentation step Spalling, scabbing, penetration and perforation events are characterized and compared with real test cases of the civil engineering industry It is found that these phenomena depend not only on the kinetic energy of the missile as predicted by some recent empirical laws but also on its momentum This means that the dynamic impact loading time is determinant in the scabbing and perforation thicknesses When the numerical data is plotted against the empirical rules determined from experimental data, the fit is good although the model is two dimensional © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Design of composite SC walls to prevent perforation from missile impact

The upcoming need of concrete structures designed against impulsive loading such impact requires analytical treatments comparable to those existing for structures under static loading in spite of a poor state of knowledge of material behaviour in this range of loading. This paper first presents basic relations and empirical formulae used by civil engineers for the design of concrete structures under impacts. Experimental analyses of concrete behaviour under high triaxial stress and high strain rates show that empirical formulae have to be used with care. Some recent numerical developments are also shown.

Improved empirical methods for the prediction of perforation of reinforced concrete barriers by missiles produced by turbine fracture are developed. Data from recent turbine missile tests and existing empirical methods of perforation damage analysis were collected and compared. Selected formulas were chosen for improvement. For each, modifications are proposed which result in a more accurate prediction of the occurrence of perforation of reinforced concrete barriers by missiles typical of those that might be found at nuclear power generating facilities. Also, a method is given to allow perforation analysis of reinforced concrete barriers with a thin steel plate affixed to the back face.

Local damage assessment of turbine missile impact on composite and multiple barriers

Turbine missiles resulting from the failure of rotary machines in nuclear-power plants could cause severe damages and endanger public safety. This paper presents the current state of the art on models and methodologies for predicting the magnitude of damages and the possibility of the missile leaving the casing structure. Eight empirical methods for the perforation of steel by rigid missiles were collected and analyzed using over 30 test data from experimental works of the past two decades. Based upon the analyses, several modifications of the empirical and semiempirical formulas are proposed to evaluate the problem of containment and to better reflect the amount of damage resulting from turbine missile impact. The modified formulas are shown to be accurate for over 90% of the test results. It was also found that use of an equivalent missile diameter was helpful in accounting for the piercing impacts in the experimental works. It further reduced the nonconservative nature of the predictions.
