For example, much current research addresses the relationship between design sketching and cognitive process affecting the products of individual designers. This emphasis on graphics overshadows the role of text in design. While most CAD tools pursue increasingly realistic computer graphics, the interactions of designing require broader support. 
In this paper, we consider the importance of text in collaborative architectural design. Text is a common medium to record information in computer technology and has a role to play in an architectural design process. In the collaborative environment, a shared understanding and preserved history are important for communication. In this way, just as graphics can be seen as a cognitive aid, so too can text. Any singular design medium is insufficient to present the design idea thoroughly. Several design media should coexist.
This paper outlines the cognitive background graphics in design, then reviews the role of text in design collaboration, drawing upon experimental results from cognitive science and architectural settings. As a conclusion, the paper sets out a direction for future research and development of tools to support collaborative design communication.

Reflections on computer-mediated architectural design

We use linkographs as a means to examine single and double loop learning within three designed settings. Two types of learning are dynamic processes related to design process. The linkograph is a technique to examine the inter-connective pattern of design moves. Extending our previous analysis of design communications, we investigate the extent to which Schon’s design process consisting of “framing-moving-reflecting” can be identified in communications. The linkographs identify learning loops, the results support prior findings that distal text based communication, although less extensive, is richer in design exchanges; here richer learning is also identified.

Examining Learning in Multiple Settings

Computers are a problem. They are expensive, even if the prices have dropped dramatically and promise to continue dropping. They do not look after themselves but demand considerable attention – we have to hire computer specialists to ensure they talk to each other, staff are required to make sure software is installed and to fix things when it no longer works. Learning to use them is tedious; skills have to be developed to master several idiosyncratic software systems. The hardware and software regularly malfunction. It is faster to draw a line by hand than with software. Students already have enough trouble learning how to stop a window leaking or ensure a fire escape route will protect people in time of trouble, why make them learn all these other things. We should stop teaching CAAD. Although technological and economic issues are very real and not to be dismissed lightly, the real problems of teaching CAAD are not these. The real issues we need to address is how we teach and, behind that, why we teach. This paper explores the what and why.
