Over the past few generations, expectations of comfort, cleanliness and convenience have altered radically, but these dramatic changes have largely gone unnoticed. This intriguing book brings together the sociology of consumption and technology to investigate the evolution of these changes, as well the social meaning of the practices themselves. Homes, offices, domestic appliances and clothes play a crucial role in our lives, but not many of us question exactly how and why we perform so many daily rituals associated with them. Showers, heating, air-conditioning and clothes washing are simply accepted as part of our normal, everyday lives, but clearly this was not always the case. When did the daily shower become de rigueur? What effect has air conditioning had on the siesta at one time an integral part of Mediterranean life and culture? This book interrogates the meaning and supposed normality of these practices and draws disturbing conclusions. There is clear evidence supporting the view that routine consumption is controlled by conceptions of normality and profoundly shaped by cultural and economic forces. Shove maintains that habits are not just changing, but are changing in ways that imply escalating and standardizing patterns of consumption. This shrewd and engrossing analysis shows just how far the social meanings and practices of comfort, cleanliness and convenience have eluded us.

It is over a decade since the mobilities agenda first emerged in substantive form. Cohen and Cohen's [2014. A mobilities approach to tourism from emerging world regions. Current Issues in Tourism. doi:10.1080/13683500.2014.898617] paper provides a timely opportunity to reflect on the achievements of mobilities thinking as it relates to travel and tourism, in other words ‘tourism mobilities’. Viewed in multiple historical contexts, the emergence of a mobilities approach to understanding tourism is entirely justified. Three enduring but fundamental issues regarding the study of tourism mobilities are discussed, including whether the tourism mobilities agenda travels well. International comparative work of this nature on emerging world regions is clearly welcome and offers significant insights. Tourism mobilities: still a current issue in tourism?

State intervention has been identified as a critical success factor in attempts to tackle climate change. However, in recent tourism studies of climate change policy analysis has been overlooked. This paper critically examines the efficacy of mitigation policy as it relates to the tourism sector in the UK. Specifically, it investigates the extent to which accommodation providers in South West England have responded to recent policy interventions and instruments, and the prospects for their contributing to the state's commitments on climate change. The paper argues for a more nuanced view of policy analysis in tourism studies of climate change. While evaluation of policy is important, efficacy is a more urgent consideration. Among tourism businesses there has been a weak response to recent mitigation policy. Climate change mitigation policy and the tourism sector: perspectives from the South West of England.

Despite substantial growth in international mobility as a result of technological, economic and political change national borders still constitute a significant barrier for tourism. Although in many countries people may believe that they have an intrinsic right to travel, no such legal rights exist under international law, with the decisions and declarations of the World Tourism Organization only constituting a form of ‘soft’ international law in contrast to ‘hard’ international and domestic law. The paper argues that international migration and trade law, particularly the General Agreement of Trade in Services, are potentially the most significant with respect to the regulation of travel and tourism mobility along with some aspects of supranational law such as consumer rights. As a result the paper emphasises the importance of cognate policy domains, such as trade, migration and the environment, for understanding the regulation of tourism and travel, and their influence on tourism policy.
