Teachers’ job satisfaction is a prominent aspect that determines workplace well-being and job performance. With the outbreak of COVID-19, changes in the teaching process have emerged (e.g., the shift to online classes and an increase in teaching hours), which might be affecting job satisfaction. A closer look at predictors of teachers’ job satisfaction and the level to which they have influenced teaching satisfaction during the period of COVID-19 pandemic is very important. This survey involved a sample of 2886 Chinese teachers to examine the effects of teachers’ work values on their job satisfaction through the mediating role of work engagement. The analysis by SPSS 25 and PROCESS for SPSS software was run, and the results showed a strong effect of teachers’ work values on job satisfaction (β = 0.203, SE = 0.203, p < 0.01) and of work values on job satisfaction through the mediating role of work engagement (β = 0.204, SE = 0.017, p < 0.01). From the correlation analysis, work values strongly correlated with work engagement (r = 0.499, p < 0.01) and job satisfaction (r = 0.360, p < 0.01). Teachers’ work values and work engagement played a predicting role on job satisfaction among Chinese teachers during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A job satisfaction survey

Purpose




The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which academic staff members in tertiary institutions in Nigeria access research grants, and to bring to light the factors that hinder their effort to accessing research grants.




Design/methodology/approach




An online questionnaire was designed using the SurveyMonkey software to collect the qualitative data from academic staff in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.




Findings




The study revealed that only a few number of academic staff members in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria have received research grants. The study also revealed that a large number of research works carried out by academic staff are funded by themselves from the meager salary they receive. It also emerged that Tertiary Education Trust Fund is the highest funding body that academic staff have received research grants from. Different research funding agencies/organizations both local and international that support studies in Nigeria were also mentioned to create awareness for others to utilize. Politics in the selection of research proposals, inadequate publicity/advertisement for research grants applications and lack of knowledge about funding agencies/organizations were identified as the most mentioned hindrances to accessing research grants in Nigeria.




Research limitations/implications




A limitation of this study is the low response rate obtained, considering the number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria which does not permit generalization. The low response rate suggests that responding to an online questionnaire is not high on the agenda of academic staff members in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, and this is a major challenge for researchers undertaking evidence-based research considering the number of institutions.




Practical/implications




The findings will provide academic staff with important data and insight into the various local and international research funding agencies/organizations that support research in Nigeria.




Social/implications




Academic staff members receiving research grants will enable them find a solution to societal problems through evidence-based research. The findings of this study will inform other academic staff of the various research funding agencies/organizations that support research in Nigeria. This will create awareness for them to access such grants.




Originality/value




The work is an original research work conducted by the researchers. The findings will add to the body of knowledge on the area of research funding in Nigeria.

Research funding opportunities and challenges: A survey of academic staff members in Nigerian tertiary institutions

Job satisfaction is critical to life satisfaction, to the quality of employees' working life, and to their performance and organizational commitment. Using the theory of work values, job satisfaction of information professionals working in academic, special, public and school libraries as well as in archives and private companies is examined. Data were obtained through a questionnaire distributed to different types of information organizations. The results showed that the information professionals were satisfied with their jobs. Job satisfaction was predicted by intrinsic work values, namely the opportunities for learning, expression of creativity, autonomy, use of knowledge and abilities, and adoption of innovative technological developments. The analysis also indicated significant differences in the sources of job satisfaction (extrinsic, social and prestige work values) among professionals employed in four types of information organizations (academic libraries, public libraries, special libraries and archives). Professionals in special libraries were more satisfied with extrinsic work values than those in public libraries and archives. Professionals working in public libraries were more satisfied with prestige work values than those employed in academic libraries and archives. Finally, it was indicated that professionals in archives were less satisfied with social work values than their colleagues in public and special libraries. A relationship between job satisfaction and years of experience was also examined.

The aim of the article is to investigate the level of job satisfaction among cataloger librarians in university libraries in Nigeria. Eighty-six catalogers from 29 university libraries in Nigeria participated in the survey. A questionnaire was used for data collection, which was e-mailed to catalogers. Overall, 86% of the catalogers surveyed were very or somewhat satisfied with their current job. The findings revealed that catalogers in university libraries in Nigeria are dissatisfied with dimensions such as roles and responsibilities, workplace culture, rewards (salaries/benefits), and professional development. On the other hand, they are satisfied with administration and supervision, performance evaluation, and opportunities.
