Gabapentin, opioids, and the risk of opioid-related death: A population-based nested case-control study.
Tara Gomes,David N. Juurlink,Tony Antoniou,Tony Antoniou,Tony Antoniou,Muhammad Mamdani,J. Michael Paterson,J. Michael Paterson,J. Michael Paterson,Wim van den Brink +9 more
TL;DR: Among patients receiving prescription opioids, concomitant treatment with gabapentin was associated with a substantial increase in the risk of accidental opioid-related mortality, and doctors should consider carefully whether to adjust opioid dose accordingly.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patient support and education for promoting adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS
Sergio Rueda,Laura Y. Park-Wyllie,Ahmed M. Bayoumi,Anne-Marie Tynan,Tony Antoniou,Sean B. Rourke,Richard H. Glazier +6 more
TL;DR: A pharmacist-led program of educational and supportive counseling is the only available intervention which has been shown in a controlled study to improve adherence to HAART, with less evidence that viral load is subsequently reduced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Systematic review of HIV transmission between heterosexual serodiscordant couples where the HIV-positive partner is fully suppressed on antiretroviral therapy.
Mona R. Loutfy,Wei Wu,Michelle Letchumanan,Michelle Letchumanan,Lise Bondy,Tony Antoniou,Shari Margolese,Yimeng Zhang,Sergio Rueda,Frank McGee,Ryan Peck,Louise Binder,Patricia Allard,Sean B. Rourke,Paula A. Rochon,Paula A. Rochon +15 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest minimal risk of sexual HIV transmission for heterosexual serodiscordant couples when the HIV-positive partner has full viral suppression on cART with caveats regarding information on sexual intercourse type, STIs, and condom use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Proton pump inhibitors and the risk of acute kidney injury in older patients: a population-based cohort study.
Tony Antoniou,Erin M. Macdonald,Simon Hollands,Tara Gomes,Muhammad Mamdani,Amit X. Garg,J. Michael Paterson,David N. Juurlink +7 more
TL;DR: Those who started PPI therapy had an increased risk of acute kidney injury and acute interstitial nephritis, and these are potentially reversible conditions that may not be readily attributed to drug treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interactions between Recreational Drugs and Antiretroviral Agents
Tony Antoniou,Alice Lin-In Tseng +1 more
TL;DR: Interactions between agents commonly prescribed for patients with HIV and recreational drugs can occur and may be associated with serious clinical consequences, and Clinicians should encourage open dialog with their patients on this topic.
