This article provides an empirical synthesis of the existing literature on the effectiveness of restorative justice practices using meta-analytic techniques. The data were aggregated from studies that compared restorative justice programs to traditional nonrestorative approaches to criminal behavior. Victim and offender satisfaction, restitution compliance, and recidivism were selected as appropriate outcomes to adequately measure effectiveness. Although restorative programs were found to be significantly more effective, these positive findings are tempered by an important self-selection bias inherent in restorative justice research. A possible method of addressing this problem, as well as directions for future research, are provided.

The Effectiveness of Restorative Justice Practices: A Meta-Analysis:

Child psychiatric epidemiology over the last 25 years is reviewed in terms of conceptual and methodological issues arising out of substantive findings. The Isle of Wight surveys undertaken in the mid-1960s are briefly described to establish a starting point, and progress since then is reviewed in terms of topics not originally covered--especially problems in preschool children and specific psychiatric disorders. The use of epidemiology to study causal hypotheses is considered, methodological advances are noted, and challenges for the future are discussed.

Restorative justice The real story

Restorative justice has burst on the international scene as an umbrella concept and social movement. We review the major streams of activism and social thought that have made restorative justice a popular idea, consider the implications of its popularity as a social movement, and identify ways to move the idea forward. We propose that in order for the field to advance scholars and activists must (1) get beyond oppositional retributive-restorative justice model caricatures, (2) address the relationship of retributivism and consequentialism to restorative justice, and (3) use more precise terms and promise less. in Undetermined MAKING GENDER, MAKING WAR is a unique interdisciplinary collection of papers exploring the social construction of gender, war-making and peacekeeping. Norms of gender and war are embedded in institutions and have implications for practice. The book highlights the institutions and processes involved in the making of gender in terms of both men and women, both masculinity and femininity. The ‘war question for feminism’ marks a thematic red thread throughout; it is a call to students and scholars of feminism to take seriously and engage with the task of analyzing war. This book is a proposition that the war question for feminism is as much a challenge to what constitutes good feminist research in today’s globalized world as it could become a potential challenge to the construction of militarized. In altogether 15 chapters the authors analyze how war-making is intertwined with the making of gender in a diversity of rich empirical case studies. The book is organized around four themes. The first theme conceptualizes gender, violence and militarism, the second theme studies how the making of gender is connected to a (re)making of the nation through military practices while the third theme focus on UN SCR 1325 and gender mainstreaming in institutional practices and the final theme is on gender subjectivities in the organization of violence, exploring the notion of violent women and non-violent men. The evolution of restorative justice in Britain

Counseling and school social work : an experimental study

The growth of new measures of coping with crime and social disorder, especially in America, employing mediation (as method) and reconciliation (as aim) is described. Applications of such techniques in educational establishments in the United States are then outlined, including campus ombudsmen, training for conflict resolution, and school mediation projects. Early developments in Britain, and potential future directions, are discussed, and reference made to the possible suitability for starting new initiatives of the recently announced Educational Support Grants for Pilot Projects to Promote Social Responsibility among Young People.

Mediation: A New Mode of Establishing Order in Schools

The main results of the Central Lancashire Family and Community Project are reported. The project extended from 1965 to 1973 and attempted to determine experimentally the value of social work undertaken in secondary schools. Significant reductions in juvenile maladjustment and misbehaviour, both short- and long-term, were achieved. While children sent to court showed some behavioural improvement, this was accompanied by a deterioration in measures of adjustment; whereas treatment of a matched sample by school social workers was associated with sustained improvement both in behaviour and in test measures of social adjustment. The school setting was shown to have impeded the workers in a variety of ways: teachers' judgements of what were suitable cases to refer were biassed towards certain kinds of behaviour, and the teachers expected the social workers to achieve unrealistically rapid behavioural improvement. Introduction The use of official criminal statistics as an indicator of the extent and nature of crime has long been the subject of much criticism and it is unnecessary to reproduce here the arguments which abound or the methods which have been devised to increase understanding in this area (see e.g., Wiles, 1971). Although the limitations of working with officially recorded crime data are recognized, the fact that they are still taken by the general public as indicating the official picture of crime and, indeed, form the basis for political decision-making means that they remain a legitimate object of inquiry. Indeed, as McClintock has stated recorded crime data are "an important starting point and continual reference point" (McClintock, 1970). It is recognized therefore that the official statistics of offenders can be a reflection only of offenders who are apprehended by the police and taken to court or otherwise dealt with. The question of how far the sample of "official" offenders can be taken as representative of all those committing the kind of offences which get reported to the police has received little systematic attention from criminologists. Although it is obviously not possible to study this directly, the present study was devised to examine the differences, if any, between crimes cleared up by the Police and those which remain unsolved. It formed part of a much larger study of criminal networks and provided a check on the data base of that study.
