Journal ArticleDOI

Train-Track Interaction and Mechanisms of Irregular Wear on Wheel and Rail Surfaces

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors surveyed the causes and consequences of wheel/rail wear that is non-uniform in magnitude around/along the running surface and suggested remedies to relieve the problems.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thermally induced roughness of tread braked railway wheels, Part 1: Brake rig experiments

TL;DR: In this article, full-scale tread braking experiments on an inertia dynamometer are reported, where both cast iron and sinter material brake blocks are tested and a stationary pattern of temperature rises (hot spots) on the wheel tread is recorded which is found to correlate well with the measured roughness.
Journal ArticleDOI

Temperatures at railway tread braking. Part 1: Modelling:

TL;DR: In this article, a thermal model of railway tread braking is developed for use in routine calculations of wheel and brake block temperatures, where a film with thermal contact resistance is placed at the wheel-rail contact interface.
Journal ArticleDOI

Temperatures at railway tread braking. Part 2: calibration and numerical examples

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of brake block configuration, brake power, and brake speed on wheel and wheel-block heat partitioning was investigated. But the authors did not consider the effect of the brake block type on the wheel and block temperature.
