Journal ArticleDOI

Tight Junctions as a Key for Pathogens Invasion in Intestinal Epithelial Cells.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide the state of the art of the molecular mechanisms leading to permeability breakdown of the gut barrier as a consequence of tight junctions' attack by pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
Journal ArticleDOI

" Candida Albicans Interactions With The Host: Crossing The Intestinal Epithelial Barrier"

TL;DR: An overview of the current knowledge regarding the mechanisms of pathogenicity that allow the fungus to reach and translocate the gut barrier is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI

Membrane protective role of autophagic machinery during infection of epithelial cells by Candida albicans

TL;DR: It is shown that the autophagy-related key proteins ATG5 and ATG16L1 contribute to plasma membrane repair mediated by lysosomal exocytosis and participate in protecting epithelial cells against C. albicans-induced cell death.
