Journal ArticleDOI
Control of Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis: The best way forward for sub-Saharan Africa?
Sarah Gabriël,Pierre Dorny,Kabemba E. Mwape,Chiara Trevisan,Uffe Christian Braae,Pascal Magnussen,SĂŠverine Thys,Carol Bulaya,Isaac K. Phiri,C.S. Sikasunge,Chitwambi Makungu,Sónia Afonso,Q Nicolau,Maria Vang Johansen +13 more
TL;DR: This manuscript looks critically into currently existing control options and provides suggestions on which (combination of) tools would be most effective in the control of T. solium taeniasis/cysticercosis in sub-Saharan Africa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Taenia solium taeniosis/cysticercosis and the co-distribution with schistosomiasis in Africa.
Uffe Christian Braae,Christopher F.L. Saarnak,Samson Mukaratirwa,Brecht Devleesschauwer,Brecht Devleesschauwer,Pascal Magnussen,Maria Vang Johansen +6 more
TL;DR: T. solium infection is grossly under-reported and expected to be more widespread than this study suggests, and in areas where co-distribution occurs there is a need for increased emphasis on evaluation of integrated intervention approaches for these two helminth infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis in slaughtered pigs, goats, and sheep in Tanzania.
Uffe Christian Braae,Mwemezi Kabululu,Michelle Elisabeth Nørmark,Peter Nejsum,Helena Aminel Ngowi,Maria Vang Johansen +5 more
TL;DR: The prevalence found in small ruminants was comparable to other studies conducted in Africa, but for pigs, it is one of the highest recorded to date, and DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1) from a subsample of metacestodes from goats and sheep confirmed the T. hydatigena infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
CystiSim : an agent-based model for Taenia solium transmission and control
Uffe Christian Braae,Brecht Devleesschauwer,Sarah Gabriël,Pierre Dorny,Pierre Dorny,Niko Speybroeck,Pascal Magnussen,Paul R. Torgerson,Maria Vang Johansen +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an agent-based model for T. solium transmission and control was developed in R and available as an R package (http://cran.r-project.org/package=cystiSim).
Journal ArticleDOI
Temporal fluctuations in the sero-prevalence of Taenia solium cysticercosis in pigs in Mbeya Region, Tanzania.
TL;DR: The observed fluctuations contradict a theoretical model which predicts a stable equilibrium, which only considers a two-compartment (pig and human) model excluding the effect of the environment.
