TL;DR: In this paper, the authors attributed the photoabsorption spectra of rare earths to exchange interaction, which splits the $4{d}^{9}4{f}^{N+1} configuration and raises some multiplets by 20 eV.
Abstract: Broad peaks observed in the photoabsorption spectra of rare earths \ensuremath{\sim}10-20 eV above the $4d$ edge are attributed to transitions $4{d}^{10}4{f}^{N}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}4{d}^{9}4{f}^{N+1}$. Exchange interaction splits the $4{d}^{9}4{f}^{N+1}$ configuration and raises some multiplets by \ensuremath{\sim}20 eV. Autoionization to $4{d}^{9}\ensuremath{-}4{f}^{N}\ensuremath{\epsilon}f$ broadens the high levels. The interpretation extends to $p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}d$ processes observed in the absorption of synchrotron light by transition elements.

TL;DR: In this paper, high-resolution measurements of near threshold photodetachment near threshold are interpreted on the basis of an intermediate $[{p}^{4}(^{3}P)+e(l=0)]^{2}P$ complex which dissociates into $\mathrm{jj}$-coupled constituents.
Abstract: High-resolution measurements of ${\mathrm{S}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ photodetachment near threshold are interpreted on the basis of an intermediate $[{p}^{4}(^{3}P)+e(l=0)]^{2}P$ complex which dissociates into $\mathrm{jj}$-coupled constituents. The $e\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{S}$ interaction is represented by doublet and quartet scattering lengths ${a}_{d}$ and ${a}_{q}$. Relative cross sections are calculated in terms of electron energies, and of ${a}_{d}$ and ${a}_{q}$. Thereby we generalize to a multichannel process the scattering-length theory of cross sections near $s$-wave thresholds. Many features of the experimental data are accounted for. Predictions are made on the spin-polarization effects of circularly polarized light.
