Assessing challenges for implementing Industry 4.0: Implications for process safety and environmental protection

This paper focuses on a direct command generation technique for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine systems. In this paradigm, higher-order differences of a given trajectory (i.e, position) are computed and the resulting data are compacted via data compression techniques. As a part of the command generation scheme, the paper also introduces a new data compression technique titled ΔY10. Apart from this new method, the performances of the proposed generator employing different compression algorithms (such as Huffman Coding, Arithmetic Coding, LZW, and ΔY10) are also assessed through a test case. The paper shows that the ΔY10 technique, which is suitable for real-time hardware implementation, exhibits much better performance than its counterparts in terms of data compaction achieved.

Evaluation of compression algorithms for motion command generation

This article investigates the mechanical behavior of polyamide and carbon fiber-reinforced (CFR) polyamide structures produced by Fused Filament Fabrication. CFR improves solid polyamide's tensile strength and modulus by more than 200% and 800%, respectively. The enhancement is highest in the parallel raster due to the alignment of the fibers in the printing direction. The compression tests of gyroid, honeycomb, and Voronoi cellular structures revealed the effect of geometry and fiber reinforcement on energy absorption performance. CFR gyroid infill offers the best performance with a specific energy absorption capacity reaching 10 kJ/kg and an efficiency close to 50%. Fiber reinforcement improves energy absorption by a factor of four or higher while increasing the weight by only 10%. The energy absorption capacity of the reinforced polyamide offers enormous potential for developing new lightweight load-bearing and impact-absorbing structures.

Mechanical performance of carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer cellular structures manufactured via fused filament fabrication

A comprehensive study on water jet guided laser micro hole drilling of an aerospace alloy

The paper gives a detailed review of the approaches adopted for embedding information into/onto additively manufactured parts. The primary purpose of this paper is to review all the techniques adopted for embedding information, highlight notable trends and improvements in these works, and provide design and manufacturing pipelines to realize most of these works. It classifies these approaches into four different categories and summarizes the works carried out in each field. It also compares all the results in textual and tabular forms and then gives a detailed conclusion of the best works in terms of application and effectiveness. The four categories discussed are 3D QR codes, 3D watermarking, steganography and nonclassified methods. Lastly, it discusses the future extensions and potential improvements in the field of embedding information, while exploring manufacturing technologies.

Embedding Information into or onto Additively Manufactured Parts: A Review of QR Codes, Steganography and Watermarking Methods

Mechanical Force Generator (MFG) is a planar and one degree of freedom mechanism that can provide any desired conservative force output that acts on its input links. One can reduce energy consumption of an actuator driving an existing machine by connecting an MFG (which provides any desired, optimum force variation) to a suitable link of the machine. In previous studies, determination of the optimum force variation has been investigated. In order to experimentally verify the performance improvement by coupling an MFG to a machine, a case study has been proposed. In this case study, a DC motor drives a symmetrical slider-crank mechanism at a constant angular speed. A conservative force is applied on the slider links of the mechanism and an MFG is designed to compensate for this conservative load on the motor. In this paper, the mechanical design and the electronic components of the experimental setup are explained. Finally, the controller performance and the power consumption of the actuator, with and without the application of the MFG, are discussed.
