There is an increasing interest in creating pervasive games based on emerging interaction technologies. In order to develop touch-less, interactive and augmented reality games on vision-based wearable device, a touch-less motion interaction technology is designed and evaluated in this work. Users interact with the augmented reality games with dynamic hands/feet gestures in front of the camera, which triggers the interaction event to interact with the virtual object in the scene. Three primitive augmented reality games with eleven dynamic gestures are developed based on the proposed touch-less interaction technology as proof. At last, a comparing evaluation is proposed to demonstrate the social acceptability and usability of the touch-less approach, running on a hybrid wearable framework or with Google Glass, as well as workload assessment, user's emotions and satisfaction.

Preprint Touch-less Interactive Augmented Reality Game on Vision Based Wearable Device

This paper introduces the theoretical lens of the everyday to intersect and extend the emerging bodies of research on contestational design and infrastructures of civic engagement. Our analysis of social theories of everyday life suggests a design space that distinguishes 'privileged moments' of civic engagement from a more holistic understanding of the everyday as 'product-residue.' We analyze various efforts that researchers have undertaken to design infrastructures of civic engagement along two axes: the everyday-ness of the engagement fostered (from 'privileged moments' to 'product-residue') and the underlying paradigm of political participation (from consensus to contestation). Our analysis reveals the dearth and promise of infrastructures that create friction---provoking contestation through use that is embedded in the everyday life of citizens. Ultimately, this paper is a call to action for designers to create friction.

How to involve inhabitants in urban design planning by using digital tools? An overview on a state of the art, key challenges and promising approaches

Emerging technologies make mobile devices promising tools to be used for e-participation. Some municipalities have already recognized this and created m-participation apps. One of the greatest challenges when it comes to civic engagement is encouraging citizens to become involved. This study explores the potential of game elements as motivational factor. An overview of e-participation tools that already employ game elements is given. The main contribution of this study are the findings of an experiment that investigated the effects of introducing game elements to an m-participation prototype. Our results show that while game elements provide an initial incentive to become active, the most important aspect for engaging people in urban governance processes is for the governance to show that they are listening and take civic input serious. We further provide recommendations for future research.

Exploring the effects of game elements in m-participation

An increasing number of smartphone applications to engage and involve citizens in themes of urban government is available and enables mobile participation on-the-go. However, the current functionality of so-called "m-participation apps" is often restricted to one-way reporting of issues by citizens, and thus more strategic long-term participation is not supported. To enhance traditional m-participation approaches and encourage continuous engagement, we investigate their fusion with location-based games in a user-centered research process. In this paper, we present the results of a web survey among 33 gamers which uncover the main motivators for playing location-based games. Based upon these findings, we derive a new long-term m-participation concept named Community Circles and introduce a first functional prototype to be used in future focus group studies.

Civic engagement meets pervasive gaming: towards long-term mobile participation

Developing web-based as well as mobile platforms to encourage citizens to become involved in urban governance and political decision-making processes is becoming increasingly popular amongst municipalities and organisations. However, the vast majority of them either implement a one-way communication between citizens and governance or tends to be more of a consultation process instead of actively integrating citizens in decision-making. Our research aims to strengthen citizens' involvement in governance and encourage a continuous dialogue between municipalities and citizens. To explore the opportunities and impacts of novel mobile participation concepts, we developed a mobile application. This paper reports on two consecutive studies, which evaluate and explore user acceptance of general concepts of our system. Being still in the development phase, we focused on specific features of the prototype. Results of both studies are presented and discussed in relation to opportunities for m-participation tools. The paper concludes with an outline of future work.

Insights from a m-participation prototype in the wild

Interactive opinion polls are a promising novel use case for public urban displays. However, voicing one's opinion at such a public installation poses special privacy requirements. In this paper, we introduce our ongoing work on investigating the roles of the interaction technique and the poll question in this novel context. We present a field study comparing three different voting techniques (public touch interface, personal smartphone by scanning a QR code, from remote through a short Web address) and three types of poll questions (general, personal, local). Overall, the results show that actively casting an opinion on a timely topic is highly appreciated by passers-by. The public voting opportunity through a touch screen is clearly preferred. Offering mobile or remote voting does not significantly increase the overall participation rate. The type of poll question has an impact on the number of participants but does not influence the preferred interaction modality.

Interactive opinion polls on public displays: studying privacy requirements in the wild

We describe how the semantics can be applied to the smart buildings, with the goal of making them more energy efficient. Having designed and implemented a semantically enabled smart building system, we discuss and evaluate the typical data management challenges connected with the implementation, extension and (re-)use of such system when employing them in the real buildings. The results demonstrate a clear benefit from semantic technologies for integration, efficient rule application and data processing and reuse purposes, as well as for alignment with external data such as tariffs, weather data, statistical data, data from other similar smart home systems. We outline the typical data management operations needed in the real life smart building system deployment, and discuss their implementation aspects.
