The Market for Virtue: The Potential and Limits of Corporate Social Responsibility. By David Vogel. Washington, DC: The Brookings Institute, 2005. 222p. $28.95.Is there a “market for virtue”? If so, what can it do, and what can it not do to improve our world? In his incisive new book, David Vogel takes aim at these questions and the now-fashionable claim that there is a business case for corporate social responsibility (CSR). He concludes that there is no business case that can be generalized to all firms per se, but there is a political case for broadening what we mean by that much-used term.

The Market for Virtue: The Potential and Limits of Corporate Social Responsibility

Abstract : A study is reported of the variations in organizational commitment and job satisfaction, as related to subsequent turnover in a sample of recently-employed psychiatric technician trainees. A longitudinal study was made across a 10 1/2 month period, with attitude measures collected at four points in time. For this sample, job satisfaction measures appeared better able to differentiate future stayers from leavers in the earliest phase of the study. With the passage of time, organizational commitment measures proved to be a better predictor of turnover, and job satisfaction failed to predict turnover. The findings are discussed in the light of other related studies, and possible explanations are examined. (Modified author abstract)

Organizational Commitment, Job Satisfaction and Turnover Among Psychiatric Technicians. Technical Report No. 16.

This article aims to consolidate the psychological microfoundations of corporate social responsibility (CSR) by taking stock and evaluating the recent surge of person-focused CSR research. With a systematic review, the authors identify, synthesize, and organize three streams of micro-CSR studies—focused on (i) individual drivers of CSR engagement, (ii) individual processes of CSR evaluations, and (iii) individual reactions to CSR initiatives—into a coherent behavioral framework. This review highlights significant gaps, methodological issues, and imbalances in the treatment of the three components in prior micro-CSR research. It uncovers the need to conceptualize how multiple drivers of CSR interact and how the plurality of mechanisms and boundary conditions that can explain individual reactions to CSR might be integrated theoretically. By organizing micro-CSR studies into a coherent framework, this review also reveals the lack of connections within and between substreams of micro-CSR research; to tackle them, this article proposes an agenda for further research, focused on six key challenges.

The psychological microfoundations of corporate social responsibility: A person-centric systematic review

In many developed economies, changing demographics and economic conditions have given rise to increasingly competitive labour markets, where competition for good employees is strong. Consequently, strategic investments
in attracting suitably qualified and skilled employees are recommended. One such strategy is employer branding. Employer branding in the context of recruitment is the package of psychological, economic, and functional benefits
that potential employees associate with employment with a particular company. Knowledge of these perceptions can help organisations to create an attractive and competitive employer brand. Utilising information economics and signalling theory, we examine the nature and consequences of employer branding. Depth interviews reveal that job seekers evaluate: the attractiveness of employers based on any previous direct work experiences with the employer or in the sector; the clarity, credibility, and consistency of the potential employers’ brand signals; perceptions of the employers’ brand investments; and perceptions of the employers’ product or service brand portfolio.

Employer branding : strategic implications for staffrecruitment

This study examines the effect of organizational support on employee silence and task performance. Particularly, the study probes the relationship between perceived organizational support and employee silence and it aims to reveal the effect of organizational support on task performance. Research data is collected from 502 academicians working in Turkish universities. Exploratory factor analyses, correlation and regression analyses are performed on the data. Data analyses revealed that, there is a negative relationship between perceived organizational support and both acquiescent silence and defensive silence, while there is a positive relationship between perceived organizational support and pro-social silence. Further, it is found that acquiescent silence and defensive silence have significantly negative effects on task performance, while pro-social silence exerts a statistically significant positive effect on task performance. Finally, perceived organizational support is found to exert a statistically significant positive effect on task performance. Research and managerial implications of these findings are discussed in detail.

Tuketicilerin karar verme sureclerini daha iyi anlamaya yardimci olmak amaciyla gelistirilen Tuketici Tarzlari Envanteri (TTE) pek cok farkli ulkede denenmis, ancak yapilan analizler sonucunda olcegin yapisi ve boyutlari ile ilgili birbirinden farkli bulgular elde edilmistir. Bu nedenle, Turk tuketicisinin karar verme tarzlarinin daha iyi anlasilmasina yardimci olacak uyarlanmis bir TTE’ne ihtiyac duyulmaktadir. Buradan hareketle, Turkce’ye cevrilen TTE olcegi kullanilarak uygulamali bir arastirma gerceklestirilmistir. Istanbul ve Kocaeli’nde okuyan 518 universite ogrencisi ve yine bu illerde yasayan 331 yetiskinden olusan toplam 849 kisilik bir orneklemden anket yontemiyle veri toplanmistir. Verilerin yarisi uzerinde kesifsel, diger yarisi uzerinde de dogrulayici faktor analizi uygulanarak, olcegin yapisi ve boyutlari incelenmistir. Analizler sonucunda, ortaya cikan olcek yapisi degerlendirilmis, orijinal TTE’ndeki sekiz temel karar verme tarzi ile benzerlik ve farkliliklari ortaya konulmustur. http://dx.doi.org/10.11122/ijmeb.2013.9.19.418

The Moderating Role of Locus of Control on the Links between Perceived Ethical Problem and Ethical Intentions of Marketing Managers in Turkey

This study examines the effect of psychological ownership on employee silence and task performance. It aims to probe the relationship between psychological ownership (a relatively new concept in the literature) and employee silence and the effect of psychological ownership on task performance. Research data is collected from 502 academicians employed by state universities in Turkey. Exploratory factor analyses, correlation and regression analyses are performed to test a number of hypotheses. Data analyses revealed that, there is a negative relationship between psychological ownership and both acquiescent silence and defensive silence, while there is a positive relationship between psychological ownership and pro-social silence. Further, it is found that acquiescent silence and defensive silence have significantly negative effects on task performance, while pro-social silence exerts a statistically significant positive effect on task performance. Finally, psychological ownership is found to exert a statistically significant positive effect on task performance. Research and managerial implications of these findings are discussed in detail.

Bireylerin yeni teknolojileri kabulunu etkileyen pek cok dissal faktor bulunmaktadir. Bu faktorlerden biri de kisilik ozellikleridir. Teknoloji kabul davranisini olcmeye yonelik tasarlanmis olan modeller arasinda en cok kabul goren model Teknoloji Kabul Modeli’dir. Bu model, farkli bilgi teknolojileri acisindan dogrudan ve dolayli iliskileri tespit etmek amaciyla sinanmistir. Bu yeni teknolojilerden biri de akilli telefonlar olmasina ragmen, bu teknolojinin kabulune yonelik yeterli duzeyde calisma bulunmamaktadir. Bu noktadan hareketle, bu arastirmanin amaci, kisilik ozellikleri ile akilli telefon teknolojisinin kabulune yonelik davranissal niyetler arasindaki iliskide algilanan kullanim kolayligi (AKK) ve algilanan kullanislilik (AK) degiskenlerinin araci etkisinin olup olmadigini belirlemektir. Arastirmanin bir diger amaci ise, AK, AKK ve davranissal niyetler arasinda literaturde defalarca kanitlanmis olan dogrudan ve dolayli iliskilerin bu arastirma ozelinde sinanmasidir. 251 genc tuketici uzerinde yapilan arastirmanin bulgulari, kisilik ozelliklerinden uyumluluk ve aciklik ile davranissal niyetler arasindaki iliskilerde AK ve AKK degiskenlerinin aracilik etkisinin oldugunu ortaya koymaktadir. Bununla birlikte, duygusal denge ile davranissal niyetler arasindaki iliskide de AK’nin araci etkisi ortaya konmustur. Diger bulgular, sonuc bolumunde degerlendirilmistir.
