A striking correlation between infrared photoinduced absorption spectra and the photoluminescence from silicon nanocrystals indicates that quantized electronic sublevels of the nanocrystals are resonantly coupled to surface vibrational modes via a polarization field produced by coherent longitudinal polar vibrations. Our experimental results and model support the assumption that the mechanism responsible for the efficient photoluminescence from silicon nanocrystals should be assigned to inhibition of nonradiative channels rather than enhancement of radiative channels.

This review focuses on the molecular design and self-assembly of a new class of crowded aromatics that form 1-D nanostructures via hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions. These molecules have a permanent dipole moment that sums as the subunits self assemble into molecular stacks. The assembly of these molecular stacks can be directed with electric fields. Depending on the nature of the side-chains, molecules can obtain the face-on or edge-on orientation upon the deposition onto a surface via spin cast technique. Site-selective steady state fluorescence, time-resolved fluorescence, and various types of scanning probe microscopy measurements detail the intermolecular interactions that drive the aromatic molecules to self-assemble in solution to form well-ordered columnar stacks. These nanostructures, formed in solution, vary in their number, size, and structure depending on the functional groups, solvent, and concentration used. Thus, the substituents/side-groups and the proper choice of the solvent can be used to tune the intermolecular interactions. The 1-D stacks and their aggregates can be easily transferred by solution casting, thus allowing a simple preparation of molecular nanostructures on different surfaces.

Characterisation of trapped electric charge carriers behaviour at nanometer scale by electrostatic force microscopy

We have investigated the decay of scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and electric force microscopy (EFM) signals from biased-probe contact-charged films of three different amorphous polymers representing wide-ranging water absorption capabilities. The surface-potential decay (SPD) has been measured by repeatedly scanning the charge pattern as a function of dissipation time t while varying the relative humidity (RH), the film thickness d, the temperature, the charging voltage, and the load on the scanning probe. Whereas increases in KPFM and EFM peak widths are appreciable only in the long run, the decay in the peak heights is rapid at the beginning and then strongly slowing down with time. Peak heights can be approximated for t<1 hour by power laws of negative exponents (−β), with 0<β<0.5 in dry conditions. β increases for thinner films and when scanning with higher probe loads. Surface-potential decay of biased-probe contact-charged amorphous polymer films

Retention and diffusion of charge in tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) molecular thin films are investigated by injecting electrons and holes via a biased conductive atomic force microscopy tip into the Alq3 films. After the charge injection, Kelvin force microscopy measurements reveal minimal changes with time in the spatial extent of the trapped charge domains within Alq3 films, even for high hole and electron densities of >1012 cm–2. We show that this finding is consistent with the very low mobility of charge carriers in Alq3 thin films (<10–7 cm2/(Vs)) and that it can benefit from the use of Alq3 films as nanosegmented floating gates in flash memory cells. Memory capacitors using Alq3 molecules as the floating gate are fabricated and measured, showing durability over more than 104 program/erase cycles and the hysteresis window of up to 7.8 V, corresponding to stored charge densities as high as 5.4 × 1013 cm–2. Detection of charge storage on molecular thin films of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) by Kelvin force microscopy: a candidate system for high storage capacity memory cells.

In this work, we report a mapping of charge transport in silicon nanocrystals (nc-Si) embedded in SiO2 dielectric films with electrostatic force microscopy. The charge diffusion from chargednc-Si to neighboring uncharged nc-Si in the SiO2 matrix is found to be the dominant mechanism for the decay of the trapped charge in the nc-Si. The trapped charge and the charge decay have been determined quantitatively from the electrical force measurement. An increase in the area of the charge cloud due to the charge diffusion has been observed clearly. In addition, the blockage and acceleration of charge diffusion by the neighboring charges with the same and opposite charge signs (i.e., positive or negative), respectively, have been observed.
