This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. The Design and Analysis of Experiments

The influence of temperature and plant-mediated oxygen transfer continues to draw attention from researchers, practitioners and regulators interested in the use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. Because the vast majority of research on constructed wetland performance has been conducted during periods of active plant growth, the true influence of temperature, season, and plant species selection on constructed wetlands performance has not yet been evaluated adequately. In this article, we briefly summarize changes in the understanding of these influences on wetland performance, and suggest that effects of temperature and oxygen transfer are not readily separable because both factors respond to seasonal cycles and because effects of one can offset the other. We further speculate that the net effect of seasonal variation in these factors is such that plant-mediated oxygen transfer affects water treatment most in winter. Results of controlled-environment experiments conducted at Montana State University support these perspectives. Different plant species' capacities to oxidize the root zone responded differently to seasonal cycles of growth and dormancy, and species' effects on wastewater treatment were most pronounced in winter.

The laser beam weldability of acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) plates is determined by combining both experimental and theoretical aspects. In modeling the process, an optical model is used to determine how the laser beam is attenuated by the first material and to obtain the laser beam profile at the interface. Using this information as the input data to a thermal model, the evolution of the temperature field within the two components can be estimated. The thermal model is based on the first principles of heat transfer and utilizes the temperature variation laws of material properties. Corroborating the numerical results with the experimental results, some important insights concerning the fundamental phenomena that govern the process could be extracted. This approach proved to be an efficient tool in determining the weldability of polimeric materials and assures a significant reduction of time and costs with the experimental exploration.

Effects of Rib-Induced Secondary Flow on Heat Transfer Augmentation Inside a Circular Tube

An interferometric measurement technique for determining accurately the temperature field around an axial symmetric vapor bubble that might be used for boiling investigations was developed. The specific setup of optical components and the fluid test cell for the generation of a single vapor bubble are described. The procedure and main steps to derive an accurate temperature field from the recorded interferograms are explained in detail. These are: wrapped phase calculation based on a four frames algorithm, phase unwrapping using Itoh algorithm, and Abe inversion for the calculation of the local temperatures. The results from interferometry are verified by point wise measurements using micro-thermocouples. Compared to formerly applied measurement techniques the presented phase shift interferometry leads to higher accuracy and higher spatial resolution.

A new type of working fluid to be used for boiling or multiphase heat transfer in microgravity conditions is proposed The advantages of using a complex magnetisable fluid for boiling or multiphase heat transfer in microgravity are presented, based on the theoretical analysis of the body forces exerted by an applied magnetic field in such a fluid, in comparison with the similar phenomena determined by the body forces exerted by an applied electric field in a dielectric fluid The experimental set‐up designed to study the effect of the applied magnetic field on the bubble dynamics, to be proposed for a microgravity experiment, and currently in preparation for experimentation under terrestrial conditions, are presented
