Agents of Religious Socialization Among American Jews

"In such a crisis environment [of assimilation], many within the Jewish community have identified Jewish education, a major transmitter of Jewish identity, as potentially the single most effective antidote . . wrote Marcus and Peck (1996:) in their "Foreword" to Drachler's monumental A Bibliography of Jewish Education in the United States (1996). In order to better examine this assumption, we will focus on the relationship between Jewish schooling in childhood and subsequent aspects of adult Jewish identity. To state the problematic concern of this paper succinctly: Is the continued involvement of children in Jewish study associated with adult commitment to Jewish identity as measured by varying attitudes and behaviors? (This paper is limited to an examination of elementary and secondary education and excludes college and adult education.)
