Social marking and the mental coloring of identity: Sexual identity construction and maintenance in the United States

TL;DR: In this paper, the concepts of social marking and mental coloring are proposed as processes in assigning and maintaining other-defined sexual identities in the United States, and two ideal-typical classification conventions for assigning marked identities are introduced: the mental one-drop rule and the mental entire ocean rule.
