Journal ArticleDOI

Calcium entry in the calcium paradox

TL;DR: The entry of large amount of Ca2+ appears to trigger a sequence of events that results in cell destruction, and this may involve acidification of the cytosol due to the breakdown of ATP.
Journal ArticleDOI

Calcium-mediated damage during post-ischaemic reperfusion.

TL;DR: Reperfusion with hypoxic buffer after 60 min ischaemia did not alter Ca2+ gain, but readmission of oxygen after a period of hypoxic post-ischaemic reperfusion triggered a further gain in Ca2+.
Journal ArticleDOI

Calcium exchange in cardiac muscle: a basic mechanism of drug action.

TL;DR: The available data support the hypothesis that drug-induced changes in myoplasmic Ca ++ may be responsible for the cardioactive properties of these drugs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Calcium, sodium, and the calcium paradox.

TL;DR: It is proposed that the gain in calcium that occurs during calcium repletion after a period of calcium-free perfusion can be divided into at least two phases (early and late), and that the early phase contains a verapamil/nifedipine-sensitive component and a verAPamil / nifedIPine-insensitive component, the latter probably involving sodium-calcium exchange.
