A systematic and detailed study for size-specific antibacterial efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using a co-reduction approach is presented here. Nucleation and growth kinetics during the synthesis process was precisely controlled and AgNPs of average size 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50, 63, 85, and 100 nm were synthesized with good yield and monodispersity. We found the bacteriostatic/bactericidal effect of AgNPs to be size and dose-dependent as determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of silver nanoparticles against four bacterial strains. Out of the tested strains, Escherichia coli MTCC 443 and Staphylococcus aureus NCIM 5201 were found to be the most and least sensitive strains regardless of AgNP size. For AgNPs with less than 10 nm size, the antibacterial efficacy was significantly enhanced as revealed through delayed bacterial growth kinetics, corresponding MIC/MBC values and disk diffusion tests. AgNPs of the smallest size, i.e., 5 nm demonstrated the best results and mediated the fastest bactericidal activity against all the tested strains compared to AgNPs having 7 nm and 10 nm sizes at similar bacterial concentrations. TEM analysis of AgNP treated bacterial cells showed the presence of AgNPs on the cell membrane, and AgNPs internalized within the cells.

Size-controlled silver nanoparticles synthesized over the range 5–100 nm using the same protocol and their antibacterial efficacy

Silver nanoparticles (NPs) have been the subjects of researchers because of their unique properties (e.g., size and shape depending optical, antimicrobial, and electrical properties). A variety of preparation techniques have been reported for the synthesis of silver NPs; notable examples include, laser ablation, gamma irradiation, electron irradiation, chemical reduction, photochemical methods, microwave processing, and biological synthetic methods. This review presents an overview of silver nanoparticle preparation by physical, chemical, and biological synthesis. The aim of this review article is, therefore, to reflect on the current state and future prospects, especially the potentials and limitations of the above mentioned techniques for industries.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles: chemical, physical and biological methods.

Wet chemistry in organic solvents has proven highly efficient for the preparation of several types of metallic, metal-oxide, and semiconductor nanostructures. This Short Review focuses on the use of oleylamine (OAm) as a versatile reagent for the synthesis of various nanoparticle systems. We describe the ability of OAm to act as a surfactant, solvent, and reducing agent, as a function of other synthesis parameters. We also discuss the specific role of OAm either alone or in combination with other reactants, to form nanostructures using a variety of organic or inorganic compounds as precursors. In certain cases OAm can form complex compounds with the metal ions of the corresponding precursor, leading to metastable compounds that can act as secondary precursors and thus be decomposed in a controlled way to yield nanoparticles. Oleylamine in Nanoparticle Synthesis

In recent years the outbreak of re-emerging and emerging infectious diseases has been a significant burden on global economies and public health. The growth of population and urbanization along with poor water supply and environmental hygiene are the main reasons for the increase in outbreak of infectious pathogens. Transmission of infectious pathogens to the community has caused outbreaks of diseases such as influenza (A/H5N1), diarrhea (Escherichia coli), cholera (Vibrio cholera), etc throughout the world. The comprehensive treatments of environments containing infectious pathogens using advanced disinfectant nanomaterials have been proposed for prevention of the outbreaks. Among these nanomaterials, silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) with unique properties of high antimicrobial activity have attracted much interest from scientists and technologists to develop nanosilver-based disinfectant products. This article aims to review the synthesis routes and antimicrobial effects of Ag-NPs against various pathogens including bacteria, fungi and virus. Toxicology considerations of Ag-NPs to humans and ecology are discussed in detail. Some current applications of Ag-NPs in water-, air- and surface- disinfection are described. Finally, future prospects of Ag-NPs for treatment and prevention of currently emerging infections are discussed.

An evidence-based environmental perspective of manufactured silver nanoparticle in syntheses and applications: a systematic review and critical appraisal of peer-reviewed scientific papers.

Nearly monodisperse silver nanoparticles have been prepared in a simple oleylamine-liquid paraffin system. Intensive study has found that the formation process of silver nanoparticles could be divided into three stages: growth, incubation, and Ostwald ripening stages. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM have all demonstrated the occurrence of Ostwald ripening, which could result in better control over the size and size distribution of silver nanoparticles. SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering) results show that the as-obtained silver nanoparticles can self-assemble into ordered arrays. The possible reduction mechanism of silver ions by oleylamine is related to the Ag+-mediated conversion of primary amines to nitriles.
