The successful photo-catalyst library gives significant information on feature that affects photo-catalytic performance and proposes new materials. Competency is considerably significant to form multi-functional photo-catalysts with flexible characteristics. Since recently, two-dimensional materials (2DMs) gained much attention from researchers, due to their unique thickness-dependent uses, mainly for photo-catalytic, outstanding chemical and physical properties. Photo-catalytic water splitting and hydrogen (H2) evolution by plentiful compounds as electron (e−) donors is estimated to participate in constructing clean method for solar H2-formation. Heterogeneous photo-catalysis received much research attention caused by their applications to tackle numerous energy and environmental issues. This broad review explains progress regarding 2DMs, significance in structure, and catalytic results. We will discuss in detail current progresses of approaches for adjusting 2DMs-based photo-catalysts to assess their photo-activity including doping, hetero-structure scheme, and functional formation assembly. Suggested plans, e.g., doping and sensitization of semiconducting 2DMs, increasing electrical conductance, improving catalytic active sites, strengthening interface coupling in semiconductors (SCs) 2DMs, forming nano-structures, building multi-junction nano-composites, increasing photo-stability of SCs, and using combined results of adapted approaches, are summed up. Hence, to further improve 2DMs photo-catalyst properties, hetero-structure design-based 2DMs’ photo-catalyst basic mechanism is also reviewed.

Recent Progress, Challenges, and Prospects in Two-Dimensional Photo-Catalyst Materials and Environmental Remediation

The interaction between optical solitons is of great significance for studying interaction between light and matter and development of all-optical devices, and is conducive to the design of integrated optical path. Optical soliton interactions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are investigated to improve the communication quality and system integration. Solutions of the equation are derived and used to analyze the interaction of two solitons. Some suggestions are put forward to weaken their interactions.

Influence of Parameters of Optical Fibers on Optical Soliton Interactions

Abstract Air-stable broadband saturable absorbers (SAs) exhibit a promising application potential, and their preparations are also full of challenges. Palladium selenide (PdSe2), as a novel two-dimensional (2D) layered material, exhibits competitive optical properties including wide tunable bandgap, unique pentagonal atomic structure, excellent air stability, and so on, which are significant in designing air-stable broadband SAs. In our work, theoretical calculation of the electronic band structures and bandgap characteristics of PdSe2 are studied first. Additionally, PdSe2 nanosheets are synthesized and used for designing broadband SAs. Based on the PdSe2 SA, ultrafast mode-locked operations in 1- and 1.5-μm spectral regions are generated successfully. For the mode-locked Er-doped operations, the central wavelength, pulse width, and pulse repetition rate are 1561.77 nm, 323.7 fs, and 20.37 MHz, respectively. Meanwhile, in all normal dispersion regions, mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser with 767.7-ps pulse width and 15.6-mW maximum average output power is also generated successfully. Our results fully reveal the capacity of PdSe2 as a broadband SA and provide new opportunities for designing air-stable broadband ultra-fast photonic devices.

Palladium selenide as a broadband saturable absorber for ultra-fast photonics

Abstract Layered transition metal dichalcogenides with excellent nonlinear absorption properties have shown remarkable performance in acting as ultrafast photonics devices. In our work, palladium diselenide (PdSe2) nanosheets with competitive advantages of wide tunable bandgap, unique puckered pentagonal structure and excellent air stability are prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method. Its ultrafast absorption performance was verified by demonstrating conventional and dissipative soliton operations within Er-doped fiber lasers. The minimum pulse width of the conventional soliton was 1.19 ps. Meanwhile, dissipative soliton with a 46.67 mW output power, 35.37 nm spectrum width, 14.92 ps pulse width and 2.86 nJ pulse energy was also generated successfully. Our enhanced experiment results present the excellent absorption performance of PdSe2 and highlight the capacity of PdSe2 in acting as ultrafast photonics devices.

Palladium diselenide as a direct absorption saturable absorber for ultrafast mode-locked operations: from all anomalous dispersion to all normal dispersion

Rogue waves (RWs) are rare, extreme amplitude, localized wave packets, which have received much interest recently in different areas of physics. Fiber lasers with their abundant nonlinear dynamics provide an ideal platform to observe optical RW formation. We review recent research progress on rogue waves in fiber lasers. Basic concepts of RWs and the mechanisms of RW generation in fiber lasers are discussed, along with representative experimental and theoretical results. The measurement methods for RW identification in fiber lasers are presented and analyzed. Finally, prospects for future RW research in fiber lasers are summarized.

Recent progress on optical rogue waves in fiber lasers: status, challenges, and perspectives

Solitons are stable localized wave packets that can propagate long distance in dispersive media without changing their shapes. As particle-like nonlinear localized waves, solitons have been investigated in different physical systems. Owing to potential applications in optical communication and optical signal processing systems, optical solitons have attracted intense interest in the past three decades. To experimentally study the formation and dynamics of temporal optical solitons, fiber lasers are considered as a wonderful nonlinear system. During the last decade, several kinds of theoretically predicted solitons were observed experimentally in fiber lasers. In this review, we present a detailed overview of the experimentally verified optical solitons in fiber lasers, including bright solitons, dark solitons, vector solitons, dissipative solitons, dispersion-managed solitons, polarization domain wall solitons, and so on. An outlook for the development on the solitons in fiber lasers is also provided and discussed.
