Rapid prototyping for wireless designs: the five-ones approach

A Reed-Solomon (RS) code is an error-correcting code first described in a paper by Reed and Solomon in 1960 [9]. Since that time they’ve been applied in CD-ROMs, wireless communications, space communications, DSL, DVD, and digital TV. RS encoding data is relatively straightforward, but decoding is timeconsuming, despite major efficiency improvements made by Berlekamp and other during the 1960’s [2, 5, 6, 8]. Only in the past few years has it become computationally possible to send high-bandwidth data using RS. RS differs from a Hamming code in that it encodes groups of bits instead of one bit at a time. We will call these groups “digits” (also “symbols” or “coefficients”). A digit is error-free if and only if all of its bits are error-free. For instance, if a digit is an 8-bit character, and three bits of the same single character are in error, we will count that as one corrupted digit. There are two corrupted digits (but more than two corrupted bits) in the following example.

Reed–Solomon Codes

Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN) enables flexible long-range service communications with low power consumption which is suitable for many IoT applications. The densification of LoRaWAN, which is needed to meet a wide range of IoT networking requirements, poses further challenges. For instance, the deployment of gateways and IoT devices are widely deployed in urban areas, which leads to interference caused by concurrent transmissions on the same channel. In this context, it is crucial to understand aspects such as the coexistence of IoT devices and applications, resource allocation, Media Access Control (MAC) layer, network planning, and mobility support, that directly affect LoRaWAN’s performance. We present a systematic review of state-of-the-art works for LoRaWAN optimization solutions for IoT networking operations. We focus on five aspects that directly affect the performance of LoRaWAN. These specific aspects are directly associated with the challenges of densification of LoRaWAN. Based on the literature analysis, we present a taxonomy covering five aspects related to LoRaWAN optimizations for efficient IoT networks. Finally, we identify key research challenges and open issues in LoRaWAN optimizations for IoT networking operations that must be further studied in the future.

A Survey on Long-Range Wide-Area Network Technology Optimizations

LoRa is a wireless communication technology for long-range applications such as; smart city, smart industry, product monitoring and control. Throughout this article, the performance of LoRa technology in terms of coverage area has been reviewed. LoRa technology allows long-distance connections thanks to chirp spread-spectrum modulation. Spreading factor is another component for LoRa that contributes to the coverage area. For that reason, spreading factor and its effect on the coverage are examined in real environment. The LoRa radio has been experimented in different spreading factors, in order to verify the theoretical limits obtaining the practical performance profile of the radio. Thus, in a dense urban areas the radio is tested and performance profiles are given in the end of paper. Theoretically presented RSSI and SNR values have been observed and their evaluations have been experimented under real conditions. Experiments were carried out in a crowded residential area in the centre of Trabzon. In the scenario, line of sight connections were avoided and the transmitter was placed inside the building and measurements were taken in this condition. The outcome of the article may vary under different circumstances but would provide an general assessment.

Evaluation of Low-Power Long Distance Radio Communication in Urban Areas: LoRa and Impact of Spreading Factor

The channel matched filter decision feedback equaliser (CMF-DFE) is a high performance equalisation method with reduced computational complexity, which is essential for high-speed communication systems with severe intersymbol interference. The method exploits the fact that matched filtering of a wideband channel results in a symmetrical channel profile centred on a real-valued peak while exploiting multipath diversity. This paper describes the implementation of a HIPERLAN/1 compatible equaliser using the CMF-DFE method. The performance of the implemented algorithm and the implementation benchmarks are given for the HIPERLAN/1 standard. Results are also given for a number of different modulation schemes.

Implementation of a HIPERLAN/1 compatible CMF-DFE equaliser

Field trails of orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) and single carrier (SC) transmissions are presented in this paper which puts forward experimentally obtained BER performances ahead of simulation works submitted in the literature, instead of giving raw error performance results, experimental studies are also extended to calculate matched filter bound for both OFDM and SC systems, which matches the theoretical limit of real-time wireless medium.

Experimental Ber Performance Evaluation of OFDM and Single Carrier Transmissions in Real-Time Wimax Radio

This paper is dedicated to compare energy efficiencies of ZigBee and Bluetooth radios studying their coding performances. The issue has been a hidden underneath bit energy and power consumptions of the devices. First, recent advances have changed energy consumption of the devices and secondly, in terms of power efficiency, the coding gain of the systems have been suppressed by Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) definition where the bit energy to noise ratio (Eb/No) value of the reception is more meaningful providing direct comparative value for the systems. In the end, the paper has concluded that the diversity gains of the systems are more effective, whatever the technique can provide a diversity gain over statistical average.
