Converting solar energy into electricity provides a much-needed solution to the energy crisis the world is facing today. Polymer solar cells have shown potential to harness solar energy in a cost-effective way. Significant efforts are underway to improve their efficiency to the level of practical applications. Here, we report highly efficient polymer solar cells based on a bulk heterojunction of polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) and methanofullerene. Controlling the active layer growth rate results in an increased hole mobility and balanced charge transport. Together with increased absorption in the active layer, this results in much-improved device performance, particularly in external quantum efficiency. The power-conversion efficiency of 4.4% achieved here is the highest published so far for polymer-based solar cells. The solution process involved ensures that the fabrication cost remains low and the processing is simple. The high efficiency achieved in this work brings these devices one step closer to commercialization.

Roadmap of Solid-State Lithium-Organic Batteries toward 500 Wh kg–1

A novel α-CrPO4-type vanadium-based orthophosphate NaV3(PO4)3 was synthesized as a promising anode material for Na-ion batteries, which exhibits a high reversible capacity of 140 mA h g−1 with the capacity retention about 98% after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the electrochemical reaction mechanism, structure evolution and ionic diffusion of NaV3(PO4)3 during the sodiation process were surveyed by the combination of experiments and first-principles calculations. Two different Wyckoff sites (4b, Na2 and 4c, Na3) which can accommodate more sodium ions, as well as the corresponding Na insertion process were reported to understand the sodium storage mechanism in NaV3(PO4)3. The 3d-electron distribution near the Fermi level for vanadium in different valence states and sites (4a and 8g) in NaxV3(PO4)3 (x = 1, 2, 3) and the local electron transfer during the sodiation process were described to predict the transition of the electrochemical properties. The cooperative-transport mechanism dominates the Na diffusion in NaxV3(PO4)3 (1 ≤ x ≤ 3) and the activation barrier for Na+ transport in Na1.125V3(PO4)3 (0.30 eV) is much lower than that in NaV3(PO4)3 (1.28 eV), suggesting the fast-ion transport characteristics during the sodiation process and the strong stability of Na at the 4e site.

Introduction: This study attempted to delineate the mechanism of organized left atrial tachyarrhythmia (AT) during stepwise linear ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) using noncontact mapping.



Methods and Results: Eighty patients in whom organized ATs developed or induced during stepwise linear ablation for AF were enrolled. Left atrial (LA) activation during ATs was mapped using noncontact mapping. Radiofrequency (RF) energy was delivered to the earliest activation site or narrowest part of the reentrant circuit of ATs. A total of 146 ATs were mapped. Four ATs were characterized as a focal mechanism (cycle length (CL): 225 ± 49 ms). A macroreentrant mechanism was confirmed in the remaining 142 ATs. LA activation time accounted for 100% of CL (205 ± 37 ms). All 142 ATs used the conduction gaps in the basic figure-7 lesion line. There were three types of circuits classified based on the gap location. Type I (n = 68) used gaps at the ridge between left atrial appendage (LAA) and left superior pulmonary vein (LSPV). Type II (n = 50) used gaps on the LA roof. Type III (n = 24) passed through gaps in the mitral isthmus. Ablation at these gaps eliminated 130 ATs. During the follow-up period of 16.2 ± 6.7 months, 82.5% of the 80 patients were in sinus rhythm.



Conclusion: The majority of left ATs developed during stepwise linear ablation for AF are macroreentrant through conduction gaps in the figure-7 lesion line, especially at the LAA–LSPV ridge. Noncontact activation mapping can identify these gaps accurately and quickly to target effective catheter ablation.

Conformal poly(ethyl α-cyanoacrylate) nano-coating for improving the interface stability of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4

In this report, we present a detailed study of the microstructural and opto-electronic properties of single-crystalline-like n-type GaAs thin films directly grown on inexpensive flexible metal substrates by metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The ion-beam-assisted deposition technique (IBAD) was used to obtain highly oriented single-crystalline-like buffer templates on polycrystalline metal substrates. Single-crystalline-like n-type GaAs films were achieved with sharp biaxial texture and strong (00l) crystallographic orientation. Controllable n-doping from 1016–1019 cm−3 was achieved using silane (SiH4) as the dopant precursor. The GaAs films were granular with a wide distribution of grain sizes ranging from 1 to 4 μm. Strong optical photoluminescence at room temperature was obtained and the peak intensity increased with increasing doping level. Electron mobility values as high as 1320 cm2 V−1 s−1 were obtained, one of the highest reported so far for GaAs films grown directly on unconventional substrates. Unlike GaAs on wafer substrates, the electron mobility of single-crystalline-like GaAs films significantly increased with doping which appears to be controlled by the electrical properties of the grain boundaries. High-mobility n-GaAs films on low-cost metal substrates are promising for flexible electronic and photonic device applications.
