Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.In order to meet the repair requirements in the subsea pipeline, the present study envisages the design for the sealing structure of the subsea oil and gas pipeline repair clamp. Based on the uniform contact pressure distribution theory and the thick-walled cylinder theory, a theoretical calculation formula was established to calculate the contact pressure between the sealing ring and the pipeline. With a goal of employing a φ219 subsea oil and gas pipeline repair clamp, the finite element models were established and the finite element simulation calculations were carried out for different pressure and thickness sealing rings. Meanwhile, the models were calculated based on the theoretical calculation formula. Subsequently, the results of finite element simulation and the theoretical calculation formula were analysed. Based on the theoretical calculation and the finite element calculations, the acceptance criterion of the theoretical calculation was proposed. The study lays a reliable basis for the sealing design and manufacturing of subsea oil and gas pipeline clamp.

The Sealing Technology in Pipeline Repair Clamp

Ensuring the safe operation of pipe fittings in a natural gas station is critical. The irregular shape of the tee easily leads to uneven mechanical properties in the manufacturing process. The strength of the tee may be lower than the requirements due to its unqualified heat-treatment process. As a result, selecting a reliable way of repairing low-strength tee pipes is a pressing concern. To repair the low-strength tee pipes, a special-shaped epoxy steel sleeve (SSESS) was designed. To optimize the critical design parameters, the SSESS design criteria were established. Following that, the SSESS repair testing was conducted using the optimized design parameters. The SSESS repair reliability was proved using hydraulic burst testing with strain monitoring and simulations of unrepaired and SSESS repaired tees. The result indicated that the SSESS repaired tee’s yielding and burst pressure increased, demonstrating its repair reliability. Furthermore, the SSESS repair revealed the stress and strain concentration decrease law.

Numerical Study on Tooth Angle Optimization of Enhanced Structure for Subsea Pipeline Repair Clamp

For the repair of pipeline defects, repair sleeves are the most widely used method in petro-chemical industry. The objective of this work was to optimize the thickness of non-pressure containing repair sleeve, by refining the existing design practice. Laboratory studies involving instrumentation of small-scaled repair sleeve system coupled with finite element analysis were carried out to refine the design procedure and optimize the thickness of the sleeve. Using a unified approach for finite element modeling, including failure pressure estimation and simulation of sleeve installation pressure, twenty-four cases ranging from 6–60 inches nominal diameter were investigated.
