Qualitative Research in Information Systems

ContextA number of systematic literature reviews and mapping studies (SLRs) covering numerous primary research studies on various aspects of agile software development (ASD) exist. ObjectiveThe aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the SLRs on ASD research topics for software engineering researchers and practitioners. MethodWe followed the tertiary study guidelines by Kitchenham etal. to find SLRs published between late 1990s to December 2015. ResultsWe found 28 SLRs focusing on ten different ASD research areas: adoption, methods, practices, human and social aspects, CMMI, usability, global software engineering (GSE), organizational agility, embedded systems, and software product line engineering. The number of SLRs on ASD topics, similar to those on software engineering (SE) topics in general, is on the rise. A majority of the SLRs applied standardized guidelines and the quality of these SLRs on ASD topics was found to be slightly higher for journal publications than for conferences. While some individuals and institutions seem to lead this area, the spread of authors and institutions is wide. With respect to prior review recommendations, significant progress was noticed in the area of connecting agile to established domains such as usability, CMMI, and GSE; and considerable progress was observed in focusing on management-oriented approaches as Scrum and sustaining ASD in different contexts such as embedded systems. ConclusionSLRs of ASD studies are on the rise and cover a variety of ASD aspects, ranging from early adoption issues to newer applications of ASD such as in product line engineering. ASD research can benefit from further primary and secondary studies on evaluating benefits and challenges of ASD methods, agile hybrids in large-scale setups, sustainability, motivation, teamwork, and project management; as well as a fresh review of empirical studies in ASD to cover the period post 2008.

Empirical studies of geographically distributed agile development communication challenges

The study aims to capture links between the use of encrypted communication channel Telegram and lone wolf attacks occurred in Europe between 2015-2016. To understand threads of ISIS communication on Telegram we used digital ethnography approach which consists of the self-observation of information flows on four of ISIS’s most celebrated telegram Channels. We draw on public sphere theory and coined the term terror socio-sphere 3.0 as the theoretical background of this study. The collected data is presented as screenshots to capture a visual evidence of ISIS communication threads. This study shows that ISIS Telegram channels play critical role in personal communication between potential recruits and dissemination of propaganda that encourage ‘lone wolves’ to carry attacks in the world at large. Mobile cloud computing models security issues: A systematic review

Organizations have shown a significant interest in adopting human and communication-oriented agile practices for Global Software Development (GSD). Agile practices originated in the context of small and medium co-located project teams present a number of communication challenges when they are applied to the distributed GSD. There is a need to understand the underlying communication challenges of agile GSD environment. This paper adopts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach and reports communication challenges in the agile GSD context. A customized literature search and selection criteria was first developed and then applied to initially identify a set of 449 papers. Finally, 22 of 449 papers, relevant to this research, were selected for this study. These final 22 papers were reviewed and 7 major categories of communication challenges were identified in the context of agile GSD. The review results of this paper are expected to help researchers and practitioners to understand communication challenges of agile GSD and develop tools, techniques and strategies to deal with these challenges. This paper is limited to the number of reviewed studies from selected databases.

Agile global software development communication challenges: A systematic review

Agile methods depend on active communication and effective knowledge sharing among team members for producing high quality working software systems in short releases and iterations. However, effective communication in Distributed Agile Development (DAD) can be challenging due to a number of different factors, such as physical locations, multi-cultures and time-zones. The agile body of knowledge mainly discusses some technology and non-technology solutions and strategies to mitigate the DAD communication challenges from a project management perspective. Nevertheless, it has recently been argued that there is a need to understand and analyze DAD communication from other related but different perspectives, such as enterprise strategy, enterprise architecture and service management. Due to the fact that agile EA provides a holistic view and blueprint of the whole environment in which a number of projects are developed and managed, we attempt in this study to explore the effect of agile Enterprise Architecture (EA) on DAD communication. Particularly, we propose the development of an agile EA driven approach from the architecture body of knowledge for handling the DAD communication challenges that have not been thoroughly investigated before.
