Hydrogen production for energy: An overview

The abrupt and massive deactivation of methane dry reforming catalysts especially Ni-based is still a monumental impediment towards its industrialization and commercialization for production of value-added syngas via Fischer-Tropsch process. The need for further and more critical understanding of inherent and tailored interactions of catalyst components for performance and stability enhancement during reforming reaction cannot be over-emphasized. This review provides a contemporary assessment of progresses recorded on synergistic interplay among catalyst components (active metals, support, promoters and binders) during dry reforming using state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical techniques. Advancements achieved during interplay leading to improvements in properties of existing catalysts and discovery of novel ones were stated and expatiated. Reaction pathways, catalytic activities, selection of appropriate synthesis route and metal/support deactivation via sintering or carbon deposition have over time been successfully studied and explained using information from these crucial component interactions. This perspective describes the roles of these interactions and their applications towards development of robust catalysts configurations for successful industrial applications.

A review on catalyst development for dry reforming of methane to syngas: Recent advances

Global warming due to the emission of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), has a significant effect on the climate change and has become a widespread concern in the recent years. Carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) strategy appears to be effective in decreasing the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. Despite a great progress in this field, there are still major limitations in commercialized the CO2 capture methods that rely on absorption phenomena. High capital costs of for the CO2 capture, low absorption and desorption rates (which require large facilities), solvent losses due to evaporation, and the use of corrosive solvents are among main obstructions. Recently, CO2 capture with ionic liquids (ILs) has appreciably attracted researchers’ attention. The distinct properties of ILs such as negligible vapor pressure and their affinity to capture the CO2 molecules make them a feasible alternative for currently available solvents including, different amines. This paper covers a brief review of previous engineering and research works on various CO2 capture techniques, the description of CO2 capture process using ILs, mechanisms of the CO2 capture with ILs at molecular level, CO2 and ILs properties, characterization of the CO2/IL systems, impacts of operating and fluids conditions on CO2 absorption capacity by ILs, and CO2 solubility and selectivity in ILs. Moreover, the technical and economic aspects of the CO2 capture with ILs, screening criteria for ILs/CO2 systems, and important results obtained from previous studies will form the last parts of this manuscript. This review offers a proper/systematic guideline that assists researchers and engineers to comprehensively understand and to effectively design the CO2/ILs processes, focusing on the thermodynamic and mass transfer aspects.

Hydrogen in energy transition: A review

As a promising approach for carbon dioxide capture, chemical looping combustion has been extensively investigated for more than two decades. However, the chemical looping strategy can be and has been extended well beyond carbon capture. In fact, significant impacts on emission reduction, energy conservation, and value-creation can be anticipated from chemical looping beyond combustion (CLBC). This article aims to demonstrate the versatility and transformational benefits of CLBC. Specifically, we focus on the use of oxygen carriers or redox catalysts for chemical production – a $4 trillion industry that consumes 40.9 quadrillion BTU of energy. Compared to state-of-the-art chemical production technologies, we illustrate that chemical looping offers significant opportunities for process intensification and exergy loss minimization. In many cases, an order of magnitude reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emission can be realized without the needs for carbon dioxide capture. In addition to providing various CLBC examples, this article elaborates on generalized design principles for CLBC, potential benefits and pitfalls, as well as redox catalyst selection, design, optimization, and redox reaction mechanism.

Chemical looping beyond combustion – a perspective

Hydrogen is an attractive energy carrier due to its potentially high energy efficiency and low generation of pollutants, which can be used for transportation and stationary power generation. However, hydrogen is not readily available in sufficient quantities and the production cost is still high. Steam methane reforming (SMR) process is now the most widely used technology for H 2 production, but this process is complex and cannot get thorough carbon capture. Hydrogen production using chemical looping technology has received a great deal of attention in recent years because it can produce hydrogen with higher process efficiency and can capture carbon dioxide. Many researchers have carried out intensive research work on the hydrogen production processes using chemical looping technology. Based on the previous studies stated in the literature, the authors try to give an overview on the recent advances of two categories, chemical looping reforming (CLR) and chemical looping hydrogen production (CLH) processes. Besides, the characteristics of the processes are pointed out based on the comparison with the conventional SMR process. The existing technical problems and the aspects of future research of each approach are also summarized.

Review of hydrogen production using chemical-looping technology

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is an attractive technology because it allows fuel combustion with inherently pure CO 2 separation. Two basic approaches to CLC, coal direct (CD) and coal gasification, are combined into cycle power generation systems and simulated by using the ASPEN Plus software. The CD‐CLC combined cycle results in excellent system performance with high CO 2 capture efficiency.

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a potentially economic technology allowing for high fuel combustion efficiency with inherent separation of pure CO 2 . The CLC‐combined cycle with coke oven gas as fuel and NiO/NiAl 2 O 4 as an oxygen carrier exhibits high system efficiency with a CO 2 capture efficiency of almost 100 % and near‐zero carbon emission.

Power Generation from Coke Oven Gas Using Chemical Looping Combustion: Thermodynamic Simulation

The present invention provides a carbon-based fuel chemical chain combustion gasification coupling device comprising a moving bed fuel reactor, a fast bed air reactor, a cyclone separator and an oxygen carrier storer; the moving bed fuel reactor includes a drying pyrolysis section I, a gasification section II and a combustion section III; a feeding device is arranged on one end of the drying pyrolysis section I, and the other end of the drying pyrolysis section I is connected to one end of the gasification section II, the other end of the gasification section II is in communication with one end of the combustion section III, and the combustion section III is sequentially connected to the fast bed air reactor, the cyclone separator and the oxygen carrier storer through a pipeline to form aclosed loop; tan active oxygen carrier is placed in the oxygen carrier storer; and a gasification agent distribution device is disposed at the bottom of the combustion section III. The carbon-based fuel chemical chain combustion gasification coupling device can prolong the time of gas-solid and solid-solid contact in the reactor, thereby improving the conversion rate of a carbon-based fuel, and can realize the preparation of crude gas, clean gas and the effective separation of CO2.
