Intelligent Manufacturing in the Context of Industry 4.0: A Review

Recently, cloud manufacturing (CMfg) as a new service-oriented manufacturing mode has been paid wide attention around the world. However, one of the key technologies for implementing CMfg is how to realize manufacturing resource intelligent perception and access. In order to achieve intelligent perception and access of various manufacturing resources, the applications of IoT technologies in CMfg has been investigated in this paper. The classification of manufacturing resources and services, as well as their relationships, are presented. A five-layered structure (i.e., resource layer, perception layer, network layer, service layer, and application layer) resource intelligent perception and access system based on IoT is designed and presented. The key technologies for intelligent perception and access of various resources (i.e., hard manufacturing resources, computational resources, and intellectual resources) in CMfg are described. A prototype application system is developed to valid the proposed method.

IoT-Based Intelligent Perception and Access of Manufacturing Resource Toward Cloud Manufacturing

Since 1960s, with the development of societal and related technologies, many advanced manufacturing systems (AMSs) and modes have been put forward, and they have attracted the attention of a large number of researchers in manufacturing, information and management fields. However, existing studies are mainly focused on the specific theoretical research of each AMS, and the horizontal comparison of the difference and evolution of these AMSs are not significant. Furthermore, most of the existing studies try to realize concrete technical implementation, and discussions on the relationship among these AMSs and social factors are relatively rare. Therefore, this paper aims to address this issue, and a brief overview of the development process of AMSs is first presented. Next, a tri-view model is established to analyze the evolution and socialization characteristics of AMSs. It is found that the sharing of manufacturing resources and capabilities, the value creation carriers, the value measuring criteria, the composition of the value chain and enterprise collaboration, and the user participation in manufacturing are all moving towards socialization. It is essential that the evolution and development of AMSs should also adapt this trend towards socialization in order to achieve better sharing of limited resources and efficient adding of value.

Advanced manufacturing systems: socialization characteristics and trends

Future manufacturing systems need to be more flexible, to embrace tougher and constantly changing market demands. They need to make better use of plant data, ideally utilising all data from the entire plant. Low-level data should be refined to real-time information for decision-making, to facilitate competitiveness through informed and timely decisions. The Line Information System Architecture (LISA), is presented in this paper. It is an event-driven architecture featuring loose coupling, a prototype-oriented information model and formalised transformation services. LISA is designed to enable flexible factory integration and data utilisation. The focus of LISA is on integration of devices and services on all levels, simplifying hardware changes and integration of new smart services as well as supporting continuous improvements on information visualisation and control. The architecture has been evaluated on both real industrial data and industrial demonstrators and it is also being installed at a large automotive company. This article is an extended and revised version of the paper presented at the 2015 IFAC Symposium on Information Control in Manufacturing (INCOM 2015). The paper has been restructured in regards to the order and title of the chapters, and additional information about the integration between devices and services aspects have been added. The introduction and the general structure of the paper now better highlight the contributions of the paper and the uniqueness of the framework.

An event-driven manufacturing information system architecture for Industry 4.0

The objective of this paper is to depict a landscape of the scientific literature on the concept of the ‘Smart Factory’, which in recent years is gaining more and more attention from academics and practitioners because of significant innovations in the production systems within the manufacturing sector. To achieve this objective, a dynamic methodology called ‘Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA)’ has been applied. This methodology combines the Systematic Literature Review approach with the analysis of bibliographic networks. The adopted methodology allows complementing traditional content-based literature reviews by extracting quantitative information from bibliographic networks to detect emerging topics, and by revealing the dynamic evolution of the scientific production of a discipline. Literature review on the ‘Smart Factory’ concept using bibliometric tools

The rapidly changing needs and opportunities of today's global market require unprecedented levels of interoperability to integrate diverse information systems to share knowledge and collaborate among organizations. The combination of Web services and software agents provides a promising computing paradigm for efficient service selection and integration of inter-organizational business processes. This paper proposes an agent-based service-oriented integration architecture to leverage manufacturing scheduling services on a network of virtual enterprises. A unique property of this approach is that the scheduling process of an order is orchestrated on the Internet through the negotiation among agent-based Web services. A software prototype system has been implemented for inter-enterprise manufacturing resource sharing. It demonstrates how the proposed service-oriented integration architecture can be used to establish a collaborative environment that provides dynamic resource scheduling services.
