Multiagent systems: a modern approach to distributed artificial intelligence

Recently, cloud manufacturing (CMfg) as a new service-oriented manufacturing mode has been paid wide attention around the world. However, one of the key technologies for implementing CMfg is how to realize manufacturing resource intelligent perception and access. In order to achieve intelligent perception and access of various manufacturing resources, the applications of IoT technologies in CMfg has been investigated in this paper. The classification of manufacturing resources and services, as well as their relationships, are presented. A five-layered structure (i.e., resource layer, perception layer, network layer, service layer, and application layer) resource intelligent perception and access system based on IoT is designed and presented. The key technologies for intelligent perception and access of various resources (i.e., hard manufacturing resources, computational resources, and intellectual resources) in CMfg are described. A prototype application system is developed to valid the proposed method.

IoT-Based Intelligent Perception and Access of Manufacturing Resource Toward Cloud Manufacturing

We consider heuristic algorithms for the resource-constrained project scheduling problem. Starting with a literature survey, we summarize the basic components of heuristic approaches. We briefly describe so-called X -pass methods which are based on priority rules as well as metaheuristic algorithms. Subsequently, we present the results of our in-depth computational study. Here, we evaluate the performance of several state-of-the-art heuristics from the literature on the basis of a standard set of test instances and point out to the most promising procedures. Moreover, we analyze the behavior of the heuristics with respect to their components such as priority rules and metaheuristic strategy. Finally, we examine the impact of problem characteristics such as project size and resource scarceness on the performance.

Experimental evaluation of state-of-the-art heuristics for the resource-constrained project scheduling problem

Since 1960s, with the development of societal and related technologies, many advanced manufacturing systems (AMSs) and modes have been put forward, and they have attracted the attention of a large number of researchers in manufacturing, information and management fields. However, existing studies are mainly focused on the specific theoretical research of each AMS, and the horizontal comparison of the difference and evolution of these AMSs are not significant. Furthermore, most of the existing studies try to realize concrete technical implementation, and discussions on the relationship among these AMSs and social factors are relatively rare. Therefore, this paper aims to address this issue, and a brief overview of the development process of AMSs is first presented. Next, a tri-view model is established to analyze the evolution and socialization characteristics of AMSs. It is found that the sharing of manufacturing resources and capabilities, the value creation carriers, the value measuring criteria, the composition of the value chain and enterprise collaboration, and the user participation in manufacturing are all moving towards socialization. It is essential that the evolution and development of AMSs should also adapt this trend towards socialization in order to achieve better sharing of limited resources and efficient adding of value.

Advanced manufacturing systems: socialization characteristics and trends

The rapidly changing needs and opportunities of today's global market require unprecedented levels of interoperability to integrate diverse information systems to share knowledge and collaborate among organizations. The combination of Web services and software agents provides a promising computing paradigm for efficient service selection and integration of inter-organizational business processes. This paper proposes an agent-based service-oriented integration architecture to leverage manufacturing scheduling services on a network of virtual enterprises. A unique property of this approach is that the scheduling process of an order is orchestrated on the Internet through the negotiation among agent-based Web services. A software prototype system has been implemented for inter-enterprise manufacturing resource sharing. It demonstrates how the proposed service-oriented integration architecture can be used to establish a collaborative environment that provides dynamic resource scheduling services.

An agent-based service-oriented integration architecture for collaborative intelligent manufacturing

The service-orientated computing paradigm is transforming traditional workflow management from a close and centralized control system into a worldwide dynamic business process. A complete workflow serving inter-enterprise collaboration should include both internal processes and ad hoc external processes. This paper presents an agent-based workflow model to address this challenge. In the proposed model, agent-based technology provides the workflow coordination at both inter- and intra-enterprise levels while Web service-based technology provides infrastructures for messaging, service description and workflow enactment. A proof-of-concept prototype system simulating the order entry, partner search and selection, and contracting in a virtual enterprise creation scenario is implemented to demonstrate the dynamic workflow definition and execution for inter-enterprise collaboration.

An agent-based Web service workflow model for inter-enterprise collaboration

Collaborative manufacturing is a new paradigm for the 21st century manufacturing. This paper proposes a service oriented integration framework based on emerging technologies including software agents and Web services. A software prototype system has been implemented to demonstrate how the proposed service oriented integration framework could be used to establish a dynamic collaborative environment for inter-enterprise collaboration.

Implementing collaborative manufacturing with intelligent Web services

OWLS (Web Ontology Language for Services) is being widely concerned of composing a Web service based workflow. However, a complete workflow should include both internal and external processes for their strong correlation that can be expressed by the logic power of the Web Ontology Language. Moreover, agent based workflow, from another point of view, provides a flexible mechanism for service discovery and dynamic workflow coordination at run time. This paper presents an agent based workflow ontology model for the purpose of semantic workflow building, reasoning, and process reconfiguration.
