Machine Learning for Internet of Things Data Analysis: A Survey

The Internet of Things (IoT) provides the ability for humans and computers to learn and interact from billions of things that include sensors, actuators, services, and other Internet-connected objects. The realization of IoT systems will enable seamless integration of the cyber world with our physical world and will fundamentally change and empower human interaction with the world. A key technology in the realization of IoT systems is middleware, which is usually described as a software system designed to be the intermediary between IoT devices and applications. In this paper, we first motivate the need for an IoT middleware via an IoT application designed for real-time prediction of blood alcohol content using smartwatch sensor data. This is then followed by a survey on the capabilities of the existing IoT middleware. We further conduct a thorough analysis of the challenges and the enabling technologies in developing an IoT middleware that embraces the heterogeneity of IoT devices and also supports the essential ingredients of composition, adaptability, and security aspects of an IoT system.

IoT Middleware: A Survey on Issues and Enabling Technologies

Social Internet of Things (SIoT) is a new paradigm where Internet of Things (IoT) merges with social networks, allowing people and devices to interact, and facilitating information sharing. However, security and privacy issues are a great challenge for IoT but they are also enabling factors to create a “trust ecosystem.” In fact, the intrinsic vulnerabilities of IoT devices, with limited resources and heterogeneous technologies, together with the lack of specifically designed IoT standards, represent a fertile ground for the expansion of specific cyber threats. In this paper, we try to bring order on the IoT security panorama providing a taxonomic analysis from the perspective of the three main key layers of the IoT system model: 1) perception; 2) transportation; and 3) application levels. As a result of the analysis, we will highlight the most critical issues with the aim of guiding future research directions.

Evaluating Critical Security Issues of the IoT World: Present and Future Challenges

For missile’s accuracy assessment, an accurate separation about the guidance of systematic errors is a critical part. Based on the vehicles from a mobile launcher platform, this paper proposes a nonlinear error separation model and a corresponding method in consideration of the ill-conditioning of the environmental function matrix, and the coupling of the guidance instrumental errors and the initial errors. The nonlinear model is built in combination with the tracking data. For the error separation problem with ill-conditioning, the traditional nonlinear methods can only slightly weaken the degree of ill-conditioning rather than solve it. To address this issue, this paper puts forward a novel guidance systematic error separation method based on the artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA). We first provide a brief introduction to AFSA and then analyze the convergence and the optimality of parameter estimation. Furthermore, we present the details of our novel algorithm that can address the guidance systematic error separation problem. We conduct a set of simulations to verify our approach. The simulation results confirm that our approach, which is based on AFSA, can improve the error separation accuracy effectively and perform better than the Bayesian estimation based on the traditional linear model and the Bayesian maximum a posteriori estimation based on the nonlinear model.

Guidance Systematic Error Separation for Mobile Launch Vehicles Using Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm

In mobile wireless systems data on air can be accessed by a large number of mobile users. Many of these applications including wireless internets and traffic information systems are pull-based, that is, they respond to on-demand user requests. In this paper, we study the scheduling and indexing techniques of XML on-demand broadcasting. Our main contributions are 1) pre-processing the original XML documents by pruning the superfluous parts before broadcast scheduling; 2) indexing XML documents in the broadcast disk using DataGuides structure. Experiments show our approaches reduce both access time and tuning time significantly.

Big Data Analysis and IoT.

Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) brings a set of opportunities for the Internet of Things (IoT), which leads to innovative solutions for existing components at all levels of existing architectures. IOTA Tangle has the potential to overcome current technical challenges identified for the IoT domain, such as data processing, infrastructure scalability, security, and privacy. Scaling is a serious challenge that influences the deployment of IoT applications. We propose a Scalable Distributed Intelligence Tangle-based approach (SDIT), which aims to address the scalability problem in IoT by adapting the IOTA Tangle architecture. It allows the seamless integration of new IoT devices across different applications. In addition, we describe an offloading mechanism to perform proof-of-work (PoW) computation in an energy-efficient way. A set of experiments has been conducted to prove the feasibility of the Tangle in achieving better scalability, while maintaining energy efficiency. The results indicate that our proposed solution provides highly-scalable and energy efficient transaction processing for IoT DLT applications, when compared with an existing DAG-based distributed ledger approach.

Towards a Scalable IOTA Tangle-Based Distributed Intelligence Approach for the Internet of Things

According to the predictive results of query performance, queries can be rewritten to reduce time cost or rescheduled to the time when the resource is not in contention. As more large RDF datasets appear on the Web recently, predicting performance of SPARQL query processing is one major challenge in managing a large RDF dataset efficiently. In this paper, we focus on representing SPARQL queries with feature vectors and using these feature vectors to train predictive models that are used to predict the performance of SPARQL queries. The evaluations performed on real world SPARQL queries demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively predict SPARQL query performance and outperforms state-of-the-art approaches.
