Sensitivity is a crucial parameter for flexible pressure sensors and electronic skins. While introducing microstructures (e.g., micro-pyramids) can effectively improve the sensitivity, it in turn leads to a limited pressure-response range due to the poor structural compressibility. Here, we report a strategy of engineering intrafillable microstructures that can significantly boost the sensitivity while simultaneously broadening the pressure responding range. Such intrafillable microstructures feature undercuts and grooves that accommodate deformed surface microstructures, effectively enhancing the structural compressibility and the pressure-response range. The intrafillable iontronic sensor exhibits an unprecedentedly high sensitivity (Smin > 220 kPa−1) over a broad pressure regime (0.08 Pa-360 kPa), and an ultrahigh pressure resolution (18 Pa or 0.0056%) over the full pressure range, together with remarkable mechanical stability. The intrafillable structure is a general design expected to be applied to other types of sensors to achieve a broader pressure-response range and a higher sensitivity. Though flexible pressure sensors are attractive for next-generation applications, limitations in its performance hinder widespread adoption. Here, the authors report an iontronic flexible pressure sensor with graded intrafillable architecture that shows high sensitivity over a broad pressure range.

Graded intrafillable architecture-based iontronic pressure sensor with ultra-broad-range high sensitivity

In recent years, highly sensitive pressure sensors that are flexible, biocompatible, and stretchable have attracted significant research attention in the fields of wearable electronics and smart skin. However, there has been a considerable challenge to simultaneously achieve highly sensitive, low-cost sensors coupled with optimum mechanical stability and an ultralow detection limit for subtle physiological signal monitoring devices. Targeting aforementioned issues, herein, we report the facile fabrication of a highly sensitive and reliable capacitive pressure sensor for ultralow-pressure measurement by sandwiching MXene (Ti3C2Tx)/poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) composite nanofibrous scaffolds as a dielectric layer between biocompatible poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate /polydimethylsiloxane electrodes. The fabricated sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 0.51 kPa-1 and a minimum detection limit of 1.5 Pa. In addition, it also enables linear sensing over a broad pressure range (0-400 kPa) and high reliability over 10,000 cycles even at extremely high pressure (>167 kPa). The sensitivity of the nanofiber-based sensor is enhanced by MXene loading, thereby increasing the dielectric constant up to 40 and reducing the compression modulus to 58% compared with pristine PVDF-TrFE nanofiber scaffolds. The proposed sensor can be used to determine the health condition of patients by monitoring physiological signals (pulse rate, respiration, muscle movements, and eye twitching) and also represents a good candidate for a next generation human-machine interfacing device.

Wearable Capacitive Pressure Sensor Based on MXene Composite Nanofibrous Scaffolds for Reliable Human Physiological Signal Acquisition.

To restore the natural nitrogen cycle (N-cycle), artificial N-cycle electrocatalysis with flexibility, sustainability, and compatibility can convert intermittent renewable energy (e.g., wind) to harmful or value-added chemicals with minimal carbon emissions. The background of such N-cycles, such as nitrogen fixation, ammonia oxidation, and nitrate reduction, is briefly introduced here. The discussion of emerging nanostructures in various conversion reactions is focused on the architecture/compositional design, electrochemical performances, reaction mechanisms, and instructive tests. Energy device advancements for achieving more functions as well as in situ/operando characterizations toward understanding key steps are also highlighted. Furthermore, some recently proposed reactions as well as less discussed C–N coupling reactions are also summarized. We classify inorganic nitrogen sources that convert to each other under an applied voltage into three types, namely, abundant nitrogen, toxic nitrate (nitrite), and nitrogen oxides, and useful compounds such as ammonia, hydrazine, and hydroxylamine, with the goal of providing more critical insights into strategies to facilitate the development of our circular nitrogen economy.

Recent advances in nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts for N-cycle electrocatalysis

Progress in achieving high-performance piezoresistive and capacitive flexible pressure sensors: A review

The tactile sensor lies at the heart of electronic skin and is of great importance in the development of flexible electronic devices. To date, it still remains a critical challenge to develop a large-scale capacitive tactile sensor with high sensitivity and controllable morphology in an economical way. Inspired by the interlocked microridges between the epidermis and dermis, herein, a highly sensitive capacitive tactile sensor by creating interlocked asymmetric-nanocones in poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) film is proposed. Particularly, a facile method based on cone-shaped nanoporous anodized aluminum oxide templates is proposed to cost-effectively fabricate the highly ordered nanocones in a controllable manner and on a large scale. Finite-element analysis reveals that under vertical forces, the strain/stress can be highly strengthened and localized at the contact apexes, resulting in an amplified variation of film permittivity and thickness. Benefiting from this, the developed tactile sensor presents several conspicuous features, including the maximum sensitivity (6.583 kPa-1 ) in the low pressure region (0-100 Pa), ultralow detection limit (≈3 Pa), rapid response/recovery time (48/36 ms), excellent stability and reproducibility (10 000 cycles). These salient merits enable the sensor to be successfully applied in a variety of applications including sign language gesture detection, spatial pressure mapping, Braille recognition, and physiological signal monitoring.

Highly Morphology-Controllable and Highly Sensitive Capacitive Tactile Sensor Based on Epidermis-Dermis-Inspired Interlocked Asymmetric-Nanocone Arrays for Detection of Tiny Pressure

Sensitivity of the sensor is of great importance in practical applications of wearable electronics or smart robotics. In the present study, a capacitive sensor enhanced by a tilted micropillar array-structured dielectric layer is developed. Because the tilted micropillars undergo bending deformation rather than compression deformation, the distance between the electrodes is easier to change, even discarding the contribution of the air gap at the interface of the structured dielectric layer and the electrode, thus resulting in high pressure sensitivity (0.42 kPa-1) and very small detection limit (1 Pa). In addition, eliminating the presence of uncertain air gap, the dielectric layer is strongly bonded with the electrode, which makes the structure robust and endows the sensor with high stability and reliable capacitance response. These characteristics allow the device to remain in normal use without the need for repair or replacement despite mechanical damage. Moreover, the proposed sensor can be tailored to any size and shape, which is further demonstrated in wearable application. This work provides a new strategy for sensors that are required to be sensitive and reliable in actual applications.

Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensor Enhanced by Tilted Micropillar Arrays

Seawater electrolysis is an extremely attractive approach for harvesting clean hydrogen energy, but detrimental chlorine species (i.e., chloride and hypochlorite) cause severe corrosion at the anode. Here, we report our recent finding that benzoate anions-intercalated NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheet on carbon cloth (BZ-NiFe-LDH/CC) behaves as a highly efficient and durable monolithic catalyst for alkaline seawater oxidation, affords enlarged interlayer spacing of LDH, inhibits chlorine (electro)chemistry, and alleviates local pH drop of the electrode. It only needs an overpotential of 320 mV to reach a current density of 500 mA·cm–2 in 1 M KOH. In contrast to the fast activity decay of NiFe-LDH/CC counterpart during long-term electrolysis, BZ-NiFe-LDH/CC achieves stable 100-h electrolysis at an industrial-level current density of 500 mA·cm–2 in alkaline seawater. Operando Raman spectroscopy studies further identify structural changes of disordered δ (NiIII-O) during the seawater oxidation process.
