The biosorptive capacity of dried biomass fungus Rhizopus oryzae Went & Prinsen-Geerlings for metal sorption was compared with commercially available sources of chitin, chitosan and chitosan cross-linked with benzoquinone. Initial pH of the metal solution significantly influenced metal uptake capacity. The optimum biomass/solution ratio for metal uptake in all systems was 1 g/L. The highest metal uptake values (137, 108, 58, and 124 mg/g, respectively, for copper, zinc, arsenic, and chromium) were achieved with chitosan (1 g/L, at pH 4) from initial metal concentrations of 400 mg/L. Decreases in mean metal concentrations from a simulated copper/zinc mine effluent were 73%, 14%, and 36% for copper, aluminum, and zinc, respectively, which corresponded to respective metal uptake values of 16, 11, and 21 mg/g. The mechanism of palladium extraction from aqueous ammonium chloride solutions with dihexyl sulfide in toluene was investigated at 303 K from the viewpoints of extraction equilibrium and kinetics. The result of a loading test suggests that palladium is extracted as a 1:2 metal-reagent complex. The concentration dependencies of the reactant species were examined using a stirred transfer cell with a constant interfacial area to investigate the extraction rate mechanism. The observed extraction rate was reasonably explained in terms of a simple reaction scheme involving complex formation between the intermediate complex adsorbed at the interface and a free extractant molecule dissolved in the aqueous phase as the rate-determining step.

Measurement of the extraction equilibrium of silver(I) from nitric acid and aqueous ammonium nitrate solutions with triisobutylphosphine sulfide (TBPS) in toluene was carried out at 303 K to examine the effects of the concentrations of nitrate and hydrogen ions and silver in the aqueous phase as well as that of the extractant. It was found that the extraction equilibrium is explained in terms of the solvation of silver(I) by TBPS with simultaneous transfer of a nitrate ion into the organic phase to form an ion-pair and that the extracted species in the organic phase is the sliver: TBPS 1:2 complex.
