In this study, mechanical fluffing, thermal treatment, and phenol formaldehyde (PF) impregnation, as well as cold-in and cold-out hot-pressing processes, were used to fabricate bamboo scrimbers. The water absorption, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties of the bamboo scrimbers were determined. The bamboo scrimber made from bamboo bundles processed at 180 °C hot dry air treatment combined with 18 % PF resin loading showed good technological properties. This bamboo scrimber had improved water absorption, as well as thickness and width swelling behavior, which is favorable for application to outdoor landscaping, exterior decoration, and garden furniture. The bamboo scrimber made from bamboo bundles processed at 0.35 MPa saturated steam treatment showed excellent mechanical strength, which is favorable for structural application.

Fabrication, material properties, and application of bamboo scrimber

The research and development of biomass composites provide an effective approach for green growth and protecting the environment. This chapter focuses on bamboo fiber and advanced bamboo fiber reinforced composites (BFRC), which have attracted the attention of many industries. The first part of this chapter presents the latest research about bamboo fiber: its morphology, mechanical property, testing methods, and environment adaptation. The best representations of advanced bamboo fiber reinforced composites are core–shell structural bamboo plastic composite (BPC), bamboo bundle laminated veneer lumber (BLVL), and bamboo composite pressure pipe (BCPP). A summary of the processing technology, interfacial modification, assemble pattern design, material properties, and pilot application of the advanced bamboo fiber reinforced composites was presented. The value of bamboo as an eco-friendly material was analyzed with a series of tests and the development of various types of bamboo-based products. The relationship between bamboo growth character and its physical and mechanical properties, the R&D of large-span bamboo-based engineering materials and components, the dedicated assembly design for a bamboo-based mobile house with BLVL wall panels, and the R&D of bamboo-based products with a special-shaped structure were proposed, prospectively.

Development of bamboo fiber-based composites

At present, China is the world's largest producer of bamboo resource possessor and bamboo processing. The main processing method of bamboo recombination technology is rolling and compaction, by which a reconstituted material with bamboo fibrotic veneer as matrix and phenolic resin as reinforcement is prepared. It has excellent physical and mechanical properties and can replace high-quality wood to manufacture various engineering structural materials and building decoration materials. This paper reviewed the research process and progress of bamboo recombination technology, the existing technical problems and prospects, in order to provide references for future research on bamboo recombination theory and production practice. In recent years, as a new material with controllable properties, designable structures, and adjustable dimensions, bamboo reconstituted materials have been comprehensively studied from the aspects of pressing process parameters, physicochemical mechanical properties evaluation system, and microstructure characterization, but the research is not comprehensive and has not in-depth view. In the future, the relationship between microstructure and performance should be emphatically studied to clarify the law of mechanical performance change and ultimate mechanical performance under synergistic enhancement effect, as well as the performance change and interface formation of the resin during the entire molding process. Meanwhile, the reliability and relevance of applied research should be further expanded, and the integration of natural and artificial aging environment, process and performance, and macro- and microscales should be strengthened.

Effects of internal structure and chemical compositions on the hygroscopic property of bamboo fiber reinforced composites

Experiments were performed to test the compressive strength of bamboo scrimber board at different grain angle directions. Investigation of test samples allows for the identification of the correlation between compression failure stress and various failure mechanisms at different grain angles. The results of the experiments showed that the density of bamboo scrimber influenced compression failure stress linearly. A new approach to describe the failure stresses of bamboo scrimber was proposed. The density was introduced as a model parameter to describe compressive properties at varying angles of grain. In comparison to a one-dimensional model, there was much less relative error between predicted values and measured values by this 2D model. This report aims to improve the precision of existing strength models for various grain angles and to provide a competing method for the practical use of bamboo scrimber.

2D Model of Strength Parameters for Bamboo Scrimber

Glue immersion is an important process that influences the properties of reconstituted bamboo lumbers.The authors selected dendrocalamopsis oldhami,a kind of bamboo,and investigated the effects of three glue immersion parameters including glue solids content,immersion pressure,and immersion time on the bamboo composite.The results indicated that: 1) The properties of reconstituted bamboo lumber decreased as the glue solids content was reduced;2) The immersion pressure affected glue penetration into the bamboo bundles and high immersion pressure increased the glue consumption;3) the longer immersion time didn't affect bending properties,but could improve internal bonding.
