Plant diseases and pests are important factors determining the yield and quality of plants. Plant diseases and pests identification can be carried out by means of digital image processing. In recent years, deep learning has made breakthroughs in the field of digital image processing, far superior to traditional methods. How to use deep learning technology to study plant diseases and pests identification has become a research issue of great concern to researchers. This review provides a definition of plant diseases and pests detection problem, puts forward a comparison with traditional plant diseases and pests detection methods. According to the difference of network structure, this study outlines the research on plant diseases and pests detection based on deep learning in recent years from three aspects of classification network, detection network and segmentation network, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are summarized. Common datasets are introduced, and the performance of existing studies is compared. On this basis, this study discusses possible challenges in practical applications of plant diseases and pests detection based on deep learning. In addition, possible solutions and research ideas are proposed for the challenges, and several suggestions are given. Finally, this study gives the analysis and prospect of the future trend of plant diseases and pests detection based on deep learning.

Plant diseases and pests detection based on deep learning: a review.

The digital transformation of agriculture has evolved various aspects of management into artificial intelligent systems for the sake of making value from the ever-increasing data originated from numerous sources. A subset of artificial intelligence, namely machine learning, has a considerable potential to handle numerous challenges in the establishment of knowledge-based farming systems. The present study aims at shedding light on machine learning in agriculture by thoroughly reviewing the recent scholarly literature based on keywords’ combinations of “machine learning” along with “crop management”, “water management”, “soil management”, and “livestock management”, and in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Only journal papers were considered eligible that were published within 2018–2020. The results indicated that this topic pertains to different disciplines that favour convergence research at the international level. Furthermore, crop management was observed to be at the centre of attention. A plethora of machine learning algorithms were used, with those belonging to Artificial Neural Networks being more efficient. In addition, maize and wheat as well as cattle and sheep were the most investigated crops and animals, respectively. Finally, a variety of sensors, attached on satellites and unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, have been utilized as a means of getting reliable input data for the data analyses. It is anticipated that this study will constitute a beneficial guide to all stakeholders towards enhancing awareness of the potential advantages of using machine learning in agriculture and contributing to a more systematic research on this topic.

Machine Learning in Agriculture: A Comprehensive Updated Review.

Accurately detecting and counting fruits during plant growth using imaging and computer vision is of importance not only from the point of view of reducing labor intensive manual measurements of phenotypic information, but also because it is a critical step toward automating processes such as harvesting. Deep learning based methods have emerged as the state-of-the-art techniques in many problems in image segmentation and classification, and have a lot of promise in challenging domains such as agriculture, where they can deal with the large variability in data better than classical computer vision methods. This paper reports results on the detection of tomatoes in images taken in a greenhouse, using the MaskRCNN algorithm, which detects objects and also the pixels corresponding to each object. Our experimental results on the detection of tomatoes from images taken in greenhouses using a RealSense camera are comparable to or better than the metrics reported by earlier work, even though those were obtained in laboratory conditions or using higher resolution images. Our results also show that MaskRCNN can implicitly learn object depth, which is necessary for background elimination.

Automated plant leaf disease detection and classification using optimal MobileNet based convolutional neural networks

In recent times, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture has become the most important. The technology adoption in agriculture if creatively approached. Controlling on the diseased leaves during the growing stages of crops is a crucial step. The disease detection, classification, and analysis of diseased leaves at an early stage, as well as possible solutions, are always helpful in agricultural progress. The disease detection and classification of different crops, especially tomatoes and grapes, is a major emphasis of our proposed research. The important objective is to forecast the sort of illness that would affect grapes and tomato leaves at an early stage. The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) methods are used for detecting Multi-Crops Leaf Disease (MCLD). The features extraction of images using a deep learning-based model classified the sick and healthy leaves. The CNN based Visual Geometry Group (VGG) model is used for improved performance measures. The crops leaves images dataset is considered for training and testing the model. The performance measure parameters, i.e., accuracy, sensitivity, specificity precision, recall and F1-score were calculated and monitored. The main objective of research with the proposed model is to make on-going improvements in the performance. The designed model classifies disease-affected leaves with greater accuracy. In the experiment proposed research has achieved an accuracy of 98.40% of grapes and 95.71% of tomatoes. The proposed research directly supports increasing food production in agriculture. 

Transfer learning for multi-crop leaf disease image classification using convolutional neural networks VGG

Black rot, Black measles, Leaf blight and Mites of grape are four common grape leaf diseases that seriously affect grape yield. However, the existing research lacks a real-time detecting method for grape leaf diseases, which cannot guarantee the healthy growth of grape plants. In this article, a real-time detector for grape leaf diseases based on improved deep convolutional neural networks is proposed. This article first expands the grape leaf disease images through digital image processing technology, constructing the grape leaf disease dataset (GLDD). Based on GLDD and the Faster R-CNN detection algorithm, a deep-learning-based Faster DR-IACNN model with higher feature extraction capability is presented for detecting grape leaf diseases by introducing the Inception-v1 module, Inception-ResNet-v2 module and SE-blocks. The experimental results show that the detection model Faster DR-IACNN achieves a precision of 81.1% mAP on GLDD, and the detection speed reaches 15.01 FPS. This research indicates that the real-time detector Faster DR-IACNN based on deep learning provides a feasible solution for the diagnosis of grape leaf diseases and provides guidance for the detection of other plant diseases.
