Solitons occur in many physical systems when a nonlinearity compensates wave dispersion. Their recent formation in microresonators opens a new research direction for nonlinear optical physics and provides a platform for miniaturization of spectroscopy and frequency metrology systems. These microresonator solitons orbit around a closed waveguide path and produce a repetitive output pulse stream at a rate set by the round-trip time. In this work counter-propagating solitons that simultaneously orbit in an opposing sense (clockwise/counter-clockwise) are studied. Despite sharing the same spatial mode family, their round-trip times can be precisely and independently controlled. Furthermore, a state is possible in which both the relative optical phase and relative repetition rates of the distinct soliton streams are locked. This state allows a single resonator to produce dual-soliton frequency-comb streams having different repetition rates, but with high relative coherence useful in both spectroscopy and laser ranging systems.

Counter-propagating solitons in microresonators

The experimental realization of a Kerr frequency comb represented the convergence of research in materials, physics, and engineering. This symbiotic relationship continues to underpin efforts in comb innovation today. While the initial focus developing cavity-based frequency combs relied on existing microresonator architectures and classic optical materials, in recent years, this trend has been disrupted. This paper reviews the latest achievements in frequency comb generation using resonant cavities, placing them within the broader historical context of the field. After presenting well-established material systems and device designs, the emerging materials and device architectures are examined. Specifically, the unconventional material systems as well as atypical device designs that have enabled tailored dispersion profiles and improved comb performance are compared to the current state of art. The remaining challenges and outlook for the field of cavity-based frequency combs are evaluated.

Emerging material systems for integrated optical Kerr frequency combs

Microresonators on a photonic chip could enhance nonlinear optics effects and thus are promising for realizing scalable high-efficiency frequency conversion devices. However, fulfilling phase matching conditions among multiple wavelengths remains a significant challenge. Here, we present a feasible scheme for degenerate sum-frequency conversion that only requires the two-mode phase matching condition. When the drive and the signal are both near resonance to the same telecom mode, an on-chip photon-number conversion efficiency up to 42% is achieved, showing a broad tuning bandwidth over 250 GHz. Furthermore, cascaded Pockels and Kerr nonlinear optical effects are observed, enabling the parametric amplification of the optical signal to distinct wavelengths in a single device. The scheme demonstrated in this Letter provides an alternative approach to realizing high-efficiency frequency conversion and is promising for future studies on communications, atom clocks, sensing, and imaging.

Efficient Frequency Conversion in a Degenerate χ^{(2)} Microresonator.

Abstract Light, sound, and microwave are important tools for many interdisciplinary applications in a multi-physical environment, and they usually are inefficient to be detected simultaneously in the same physical platform. However, at the microscopic scale, these waves can unexpectedly interact with the same microstructure through resonant enhancement, making it a unique hybrid micro-system for new applications across multiple physical channels. Here we experimentally demonstrate an optomechanical microdevice based on Brillouin lasing operation in an optical microcavity as a sensitive unit to sense external light, sound, and microwave signals in the same platform. These waves can induce modulations to the microcavity Brillouin laser (MBL) in a resonance-enhanced manner through either the pressure forces including radiation pressure force or thermal absorption, allowing several novel applications such as broadband non-photovoltaic detection of light, sound-light wave mixing, and deep-subwavelength microwave imaging. These results pave the way towards on-chip integrable optomechanical solutions for sensing, free-space secure communication, and microwave imaging.

Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities strongly enhance nonlinear optical processes like optical frequency comb (OFC), Raman scattering, and optomechanics, which nowadays enable cutting-edge applications in microwave synthesis, optical sensing spectroscopy, and integrated photonics. Yet, tunability of their resonances, mostly via coarse and complicated mechanisms through temperature, electrical, or mechanical means, still poses a major challenge for precision applications as above. Here, we introduce a passive scheme to finely tune resonances of WGMs at MHz precision with an external probe. Such a probe remotely transfers heat through a gap from an optical microcavity, effectively tuning its resonances by thermal-optic nonlinearity. Moreover, we explore this unique technique in microcavity nonlinear optics, demonstrating the generation of a tunable OFC and backward stimulated Brillouin scattering with variable beating frequencies. This technique addresses the core problem of WGM microcavity's fine-tuning, paving the way for important applications like spectroscopy and frequency synthesis.
