Within the last ten years significant advances have been made in the knowledge and interpretation of the physical and chemical properties of organic and inorganic compounds with quasi one-dimensional crystal structures. Among these the Mx[Pt(CN)4] · n H2O compounds (with M = Na, K, Ba, Mg, Eu...) show a series of very unusual properties. These are mainly displayed by the lowest excited states which for most compounds exhibit a strong polarized luminescence. By the choice of the cation M it is possible to position the lowest transition energies within the large range from the near ultraviolet to the red. Further, high pressure application allows a continuous tuning, even down to the near infrared. By temperature variation and the application of high magnetic fields an assignment of the low-energy excited states can be achieved. Two distinctly different types of states are present, delocalized states and localized states (self-trapped excitons). By the occurrence of these different types of states the tetracyanoplatinates(II) represent interesting model systems.

CH bond length variations due to the intramolecular environment: a comparison of the results obtained by the method of isolated CH stretching frequencies and by ab initio gradient calculations

The microwave spectra of hydroxylamine and its deuterated species: NH 2 OH, NH 2 OD, NHDH, ND 2 OH, NHDOD and ND 2 OD have been observed and analyzed. Their rotational constants have been determined. The molecular structure of hydroxylamine is determined to be r (N–H)=1.016±0.008A, r (N–O)=1.453±0.002A, r (O–H)=1.962±0.005A, \(\theta(\angle\text{HNH}){=}107^{\circ}06'{\pm}30'\), \(\theta(\angle\text{HNO}){=}103^{\circ}15'{\pm}30'\) and \(\theta(\angle\text{NOH}){=}101^{\circ}22'{\pm}30'\). The dipole moment and quadrupole coupling constants of NH 2 OH are also determined. No splitting due to the inversion of the NH 2 -group is resolved.

Spectroscopic study of the interaction between the central metal ions in the crystals of bis(dimethylglyoximato)nickel(II) and related complexes

The absorption and luminescence spectra of the polycrystalline magnesium, barium, and potassium salts of tetracyano platinate (II) were measured at hydrostatic pressures up to 5.4 kbar. These three salts showed an anomalously large red shift with pressure in both the absorption and luminescence spectra. The X-ray powder diffraction measurement was carried out for the magnesium salt up to 70 kbar. At 70 kbar the Pt–Pt distance decreased from 3.16 A to 2.93 A, 7.3% in linear compressibility. In the low pressure region up to ∼20 kbar, the Pt–Pt distance was observed to decrease greatly. The intramolecular transition 5dz2→6pz energy was calculated as a function of the Pt–Pt distance. By comparing the calculated and observed values, such a large red shift in the absorption spectra was tentatively explained in terms of electrostatic stabilization of the intramolecular transition 5dz2→6pz due to the decrease of the intermolecular distance and due to the consequent increase of the 5dz2→6pz intermolecular CT chara...
