Journal ArticleDOI
The global context of the 14 November 2012 storm event
K.-J. Hwang,K.-J. Hwang,David G. Sibeck,M.-C. Fok,Yihua Zheng,Yukitoshi Nishimura,J. J. Lee,Alex Glocer,Noora Partamies,Howard J. Singer,Geoffrey D. Reeves,D. G. Mitchell,Craig Kletzing,Terrance Onsager +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the Van Allen Probes observed repeated particle flux dropouts during the main phase of a geomagnetic storm as the satellites traversed the post-midnight to dawn-side inner magnetosphere.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coordinated observations of two types of diffuse auroras near magnetic local noon by Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission and ground all-sky camera
Desheng Han,Jinxing Li,Yukitoshi Nishimura,Yukitoshi Nishimura,Larry R. Lyons,Jacob Bortnik,Meng Zhou,J. J Liu,Hu Zhengyi,H.-Q. Hu,H.-G. Yang,S. A. Fuselier,S. A. Fuselier,O. Le Contel,Robert E. Ergun,David M. Malaspina,Per-Arne Lindqvist,C. J. Pollock +17 more
TL;DR: In this article, two types of structured diffuse auroras with magnetic local noon (MLN) were found to be generated by two different types of generators, i.e., a Gaussian generator and an EH generator.
Journal ArticleDOI
Episodic Occurrence of Field-Aligned Energetic Ions on the Dayside
Chao Yue,Chao Yue,Jacob Bortnik,Shasha Zou,Yukitoshi Nishimura,John C. Foster,T. Coppeans,Qianli Ma,Qianli Ma,Qiugang Zong,A. J. Hull,Michael G. Henderson,Geoffrey D. Reeves,Harlan E. Spence +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the Van Allen Probe observations on the dayside have been used to find a possible source of the ring current ion populations, and the results imply that these energetic ions with field-aligned pitch angle distributions probably are accelerated by ionospheric disturbances that are triggered by tail injections.
Journal ArticleDOI
In-situ and optical observations of sub-ion magnetic holes
Pavel Shustov,Pavel Shustov,Yukitoshi Nishimura,Yukitoshi Nishimura,Anton Artemyev,Anton Artemyev,Xinli Zhang,Vassilis Angelopoulos,A. A. Petrukovich +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate an example of in-situ and optical observations of the nonlinear stage of one class of such instabilities associated with the formation of sub-ion scale magnetic holes in the equatorial dipolarized magnetotail.
Journal ArticleDOI
Airglow Patches in the Polar Cap Region: A Review
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used airglow patches as tracers for plasma convection in the polar cap and to understand the generation of small-scale plasma irregularities in the ionospheric F region.
