Journal ArticleDOI
The use of uniaxial accelerometry for the assessment of physical-activity-related energy expenditure: a validation study against whole-body indirect calorimetry.
Hideaki Kumahara,Yves Schutz,Makoto Ayabe,Mayumi Yoshioka,Yutaka Yoshitake,Munehiro Shindo,Kojiro Ishii,Hiroaki Tanaka +7 more
TL;DR: Although TEE and PAEE were systematically underestimated during the 24 h period, the accelerometer assessed energy expenditure well during both the exercise period and the non-structured activities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physical Activity: A Viable Way to Reduce the Risks of Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Vascular Dementia in Older Adults
Patrick J. Gallaway,Hiroji Miyake,Maciej S. Buchowski,Mieko Shimada,Yutaka Yoshitake,Angela S. Kim,Nobuko Hongu +6 more
TL;DR: Evidence of PA’s role in reducing the risks of neurodegenerative diseases and helping to improve cognitive outcomes in older adults is provided, and some potential mechanisms by which this protective effect occurs are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship of physical fitness to chewing in an 80-year-old population
Yutaka Takata,Toshihiro Ansai,Shuji Awano,Tomoko Hamasaki,Yutaka Yoshitake,Yasuo Kimura,Kazuo Sonoki,Masanori Wakisaka,Masayo Fukuhara,Tadamichi Takehara +9 more
TL;DR: There is a relationship between perceived chewing ability (number of foods considered chewable) and physical fitness in this 80-year-old population, thus preventative dental care aimed at preserving chewing ability may be able to enhance activities of daily life and quality of life in very elderly individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship Between Dental Occlusion and Physical Fitness in an Elderly Population
Takayuki Yamaga,Akihiro Yoshihara,Yuichi Ando,Yutaka Yoshitake,Yasuo Kimura,Mieko Shimada,Mamoru Nishimuta,Hideo Miyazaki +7 more
TL;DR: Leg extensor power, stepping rate, and one-leg standing time with eyes open are useful indicators in evaluating lower extremity dynamic strength, agility, and balance function, respectively, and suggest that dental occlusal condition is associated with lower extremities dynamic Strength, Agility, and Balance function in elderly adults.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-period accelerometer monitoring shows the role of physical activity in overweight and obesity
Mayumi Yoshioka,Mayumi Yoshioka,Makoto Ayabe,Takuya Yahiro,Hiroyuki Higuchi,Yasuki Higaki,Jonny St-Amand,Hideo Miyazaki,Yutaka Yoshitake,Munehiro Shindo,Hiroaki Tanaka +10 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that overweight and obese individuals have a lower step rate and are spending less time for moderate to vigorous PA, an important predictor of overweight and obesity.
