Food thresholds and body size in cladocerans

TL;DR: Experimental data from eight filter-feeding species are presented that strongly support the cornerstone assumption of the competitive aspect of the size-efficiency hypothesis, showing that the threshold food concentration necessary to assure that assimilation equals respiration, is lower for the large-bodied species than it is for the small-bodiedspecies under steady-state and low-mortality conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Food Thresholds in Daphnia Species in the Absence and Presence of Blue-Green Filaments

TL;DR: Three Daphnia species of different body sizes were grown on a single food resource in steady-state conditions and the inhibitory effect of filaments is body-size dependent, suggesting shifts in competitive ability among congeneric cladocerans.
Book ChapterDOI

Why do cladocerans fail to control algal blooms

TL;DR: In the absence of planktivorous fish, large-bodied cladocerans effectively control the abundance of algae of a broad size spectrum as discussed by the authors, although difficult to handle and of poor nutritional value, filamentous algae can also be utilized by Daphnia and prevented from population increase.
